Do Any Republicans Read The Slog? If So: Achtung, Please.

Posted by on June 2 at 10:07 AM

I wanted to call your attention to a comment that your blogging hero (and former Stranger columnist), Stefan Sharkansky, made here on the comments threads re: the controversial plank that the GOP passed at its convention last weekend. As you know, the Washington State GOP now opposes granting citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants. As has been roundly pointed out, the plank is unconstitutional.

Here’s what Stefan had to add:

Of course this particular plank is unconstitutional. Who cares? It’s a symbolic statement that represents nothing more than the wishful thinking of the grassroots convention delegates. It’s not like this in and of itself is going to cause elected officials to try to enact this into law.

I wanted highlight Sharkansky’s quote for the GOP rank and file. Any GOPers out there have a problem w Sharkansky patting you on the head & belittling your plank this way?

P.s. to Stefan: Of course it’s not going to get enacted into law—it’s unconstitutional. But that’s not why the plank was freaking people out. People were talking about it because they were shocked. The plank reflected some pretty extremist values on the part of the GOP. (It violates the 14th Amendment.) And I think people like David Postman, who led the reporting on it, felt it was newsworthy that one of the two major political parties in the state was embracing such a belligerent POV.

If you ever read Stefan's blog you'll see that delusions and wishful thinking are something he knows quite well.

Why is it shocking that the GOP would do something extremist? They're assholes.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I've never met a republican that wasn't at least a little bit of an asshole, and most of them are major league assholes. You have to be either incredibly stupid or incredibly greedy to be a Republican.

Rather than being unconstitutional, I see it more as a case of political zugzwang. If they mean that undocumented aliens are in fact illegal aliens, as they have repeated over and over, then they are under US jurisdiction and their children born here are citizens. If on the other hand their US born childern could be excluded from citizenship constitutionally, then these aliens must not now be under US jurisdiction, and are not illegal aliens.

today is german in the englash vernacular day.

Hating America, our Constitution, and our values of Truth, Justice, and the American way of life is what today's neocon unpatriotic slime is all about.

Calling them out like that is just pouring salt on the wound.

Oh, and by the way, Bush sang the National Anthem in Spanish and is a Liar.

My interpretation of this GOP plank item was that it advocates CHANGING the U.S. Constitution. Even if the rank and file of the Washington state GOP is so ignorant that they didn't know it was currently unconstitutional, I'm sure they would say it doesn't matter any way because they still would like to CHANGE the US Constitution so that children born in the US of illegal inhabitants are not automatically citizens. Since amending the US constitution requires ratification by the states, having this item on a state plank is not the non-sensical act GOP naysayers and GOP ridiculers are suggesting. It is, however, stupid, racist, and UnAmerican. (and probably impolitic)

oh, and if they cared about illegal aliens, they'd be arresting and imprisoning the CEOs, CFOs, and senior execs/owners who hire them - classic capitalism - and making sure the execs paid the fines themselves, instead of the company shareowners who don't get to make that decision.

But today's modern neocon is anti-capitalist, so don't hold your breath.

Josh, you are so righteous! And you bet, the Republicans will be listening to you!

Tell Dan to go lick his door knob!

Stefan Sharkansky just wants this bad news to go away. Sound Politics has not had a single entry on the issue, or even the GOP convention - as if neither ever happened!

If the wingnuts think they can go on the record with a racist and bigoted platform of this sort they've got another thing coming.

I'm sure Sharkansky is just looking for the first opportunity to change the subject.

Here's one Stefan: if you care so much about election reform then why not get involved in investigating the biggest crime in that realm as detailed in Rolling Stone Magazine?

If the wingnuts think they can go on the record with a racist and bigoted platform of this sort they've got another thing coming.

{proof read, proof read!}

If the wingnuts think they can go on the record with a racist and bigoted platform of this sort without repercussions they've got another thing coming.

If you like to proofread, Daniel K., you may be interested to know that the saying is actually "...they've got another *think* coming."

Wonderful. Guess I've been listening to too much Judas Priest.
