Music Dixie Chicks on NPR
Terry Gross is interviewing the cute ‘n fluffy rabble-rousers on NPR today (I couldn’t figure out exactly when from the website, but Lorraine Bracco is being interviewed right now and I think they are on next). I still haven’t heard the record and politics aside, I’m terribly curious to hear what Rick Rubin brought to the table. Any Slog or Line Out readers out there with an opinion on Taking the Long Way?
You can listen online here.
As a closet chicks fan, I was both exhilerated and a little let down by this album. Exhilerated because it is sincerely kick-ass to hear Natalie stick up for herself in such a "this is me and if you don't like it you can fuck yourself" kind of way. A little let down because the tone of the album is, for the most part, a little sad, definitely moreso than previous albums. More "White Trash Wedding", please!
Frowniness aside, the song "not ready to make nice" is kind of a heartbreaking tune and if you're not on their side after listening to it, you're probably an asshole.
Finally, the kickass song "Lubbock or Leave it" is worth the price of admission alone. A rowdy, rude, and rockin' country jam. A literary device forces the song to diss Athens, GA (where Florence, KY or Rome, OH would have been more appropriate), but that is a small aside.
Don't tell anyone that I wrote this.
