What You Should Do Tonight (if You Don’t Have Tickets to Madeleine Albright)

Posted by on May 9 at 13:44 PM

Since Albright at Town Hall is sold out, may I suggest…

The Commune, a documentary about utopian communities the early ’70s, at the Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th Ave, 7 and 9 pm, $5-$8).

Oscillate: minimal techno and quality electro at the Baltic Room (1207 Pine, 9 pm, $3).

Live hiphop and breakdancers at Lo_Fi (429B Eastlake Ave E, 9 pm, $3, women free before 11 pm).

Flamenco music and dance at the Capitol Club, plus half-priced bottles of wine (414 E Pine St, 9 pm, no cover).

Molt, a dance performance designed by Paige Barnes, at ConWorks. A friend said, “Slow, fast, warm, cool, abstract, literal… I’m no dance critic, but I really enjoyed it” (500 Boren Ave N, 8 pm, $10-$15).

The Promise by the director of Farewell My Concubine—Charles says it’s “gorgeous” (Uptown at 8 pm, Guild 45th at 7 and 9:30).

’80s music and dancing with a fun/friendly crowd at Noc Noc (1516 Second Ave, 9 pm, free).

What else?

80s at the noc noc??

i've not known of this.

shall go.

If only there was 80s night every night.

It's wicked good. Say hi to DJ Shane for me.

Even with the loss of Low Life, there's still a Tuesday night dance party at Viceroy courtesy of May residents Whisker Biscuits. Apparently last week it "was packed."

An even better option for those who want to hear currently displaced Low Life maestro DJ Curtis: Head to Linda's, where he will be playing "a lot of stuff I don't normally play. Punk, power pop, rare new wave, classic hip-hop, reggae, and new stuff. The ultimate soundtrack to lose yourself in a vortex of alcohol-induced madness to."

Given that description, that's where I'll probably head (provided I have enough energy and cab fare) after the Drive-by Truckers show at the Showbox tonight.

Also, the Mariners play at 7:05 pm. Probably some good seats still available...

"Awesome" opens for The Instruments & Elf Power at The Croc tonight, 9:00 p.m. $8. Cheaper than an outfield seat, and so's the beer.

Byron Schenkman is playing piano downstairs at Town Hall tonight, Haydn, Beethoven, Bartok. Plus, if anyone asks, you can truthfully say you were at Town Hall while Madeleine spoke.

Promise is directed by Kaige Chen not Ang Lee (the director of Crouching Tiger). Kaige Chen directed Farewell My Concubine.

Commune, though not a great film (but good enough), was worth watching for the subject matter, one of the more extreme communes of the 70's. Catch it now, because the film-maker seems to be having a hard time finding a distributor, so it could be a while before you again get a chance to see it.

Fixed. Sloppy me. Thanks.

Did anyone see 'Black Moon' at the Grand Illusion? Can you explain it to me? I saw it last night and it was too frakin' weird. I love weird movies, but this was really something else. Any help out there?
