What We’re Doing Tonight

Posted by on May 4 at 13:54 PM

There seems to be an unusually rich array of promising entertainments competing for our eyeballs and dollars tonight. I cruised around the office and compiled this list of what Stranger editorial staffers are aiming for after work. Go ahead, make a game of guessing who’s going where if that kind of thing pleases you.
“Art Walk, specifically the Punch gallery (an artists’ collective) in Pioneer Square.”
“Art Walk, 100 Balls, then drinks at the Hideout.”
“Gonna catch a buzz in the sun: happy hour at either the Broadway Grill or Julia’s.”
“The Funhouse, for psych-rockers Psychic Ills and Blood on the Wall.”
John Dean at Town Hall. He’s the former counsel to Nixon who brought down the Watergate house of cards by testifying on TV about the conspiracy to cover up the affair. He’s also a harsh critic of the current administration. Then, I’m watching a documentary with a friend that includes that TV footage of Dean’s testimony.”
“A long bike ride, then maybe the Hideout.”
“Sushi at Hana, followed by homemade lemon birthday cake and presents.”
“100 Balls, and maybe Bugs & Beer at Tashiro Kaplan, too.”
“Opening night of Cirque du Soleil at Marymoor Park.”
“Sleeping off my cold.”

It's obvious that the guessing thing pleases you. Don't pretend it's us.

Could we have names that we could match up with the activities? Pleeeeeease?

Zing! Actually, it was Dave Segal's idea today.

Right, Ames. Watching TV is for losers with no life but playing "guess which totally awesome stranger staffer is doing what thing that is totally awesome or hilarious (but perhaps only in my mind)" is not. What a waste. Hey, guess what I'm doing tonight!

a) embarking on a flight to Nashville to begin managing crucial aspects of the Bonnaroo festival

b) taking a piss into a box of new Strangers

Rachel, your boss already hates us so much!
Jen Graves, Megan Seling, Tom Francis, Josh Feit, Erica Barnett, Gillian Anderson, Kim Hayden, Dave Segal, Christopher Frizzelle, Amy Kate Horn.

Yeah, isn't it awful and elitist how all those Stranger staffers—paid to cover arts and culture in Seattle—go out and attend arts and cultural events in Seattle?

And isn't it just terrible the way the Stranger forces folks who can't stand the paper or the people who write it to obsessively read our blog, day after day after day?

Me? I'm going to 100 balls. And Sushi at Ha Na sounds great. But I plan on being home in time for the Showbiz Show and the Daily Show.

My 'boss' has no idea what I do all day. Actually, I technically have and don't have 2-3 bosses at this very moment. It depends on their mood who takes responsibility for me.
But, back to the business at hand (thank you, thank you for the names!):
Jen: The Funhouse, for psych-rockers Psychic Ills and Blood on the Walls.
Megan: Art Walk, specifically the Punch gallery (an artists’ collective) in Pioneer Square.
Tom: Sleeping off my cold.
Josh: John Dean at Town Hall. He’s the former counsel to Nixon who brought down the Watergate house of cards by testifying on TV about the conspiracy to cover up the affair. He’s also a harsh critic of the current administration. Then, I’m watching a documentary with a friend that includes that TV footage of Dean’s testimony.
Erica: Art Walk, specifically the Punch gallery (an artists’ collective) in Pioneer Square.
Gillian: Opening night of Cirque du Soleil at Marymoor Park.
Kim: 100 Balls, and maybe Bugs & Beer at Tashiro Kaplan, too.
Dave: Sushi at Hana, followed by homemade lemon birthday cake and presents.
Christopher: A long bike ride, then maybe the Hideout.
Amy: Gonna catch a buzz in the sun: happy hour at either the Broadway Grill or Julia’s.

The most productive 4 minutes of my day, right there.

Guess again. I don't even HAVE a bike. Need to finally do something about that.

I think that newbie, Tom, is probably going for the sun (and drinks on Broadway)- I'm sure he's feeling quite deprived after such a tough winter.

You win this round Frizzelle, but I was right on Josh! Yay me!

Both Megan and I are wrestling with colds, but if I can stop sneezing long enough, I will definitely fight my way down to the Funhouse to see Blood on the Wall. Their record Awesomer is quite aptly named. This is the U&C I wrote this week:

Former Stranger music editor Jennifer Maerz passionately recommended that I check out Blood on the Wall shortly before she left us—and after digesting their 2005 release, Awesomer, I completely understand why. Maerz knew my taste well enough to know that metal-minded, sludgy-yet-melodic fusions instantly prick my ears, an approach that this brother-sister-fronted band take to elegant excess. Bassist/vocalist Courtney Shanks's low, dry delivery comes off like a prettier version of Kim Gordon's monotone growl, while her brother Brad scales a higher range, screaming with all the vigor and charisma of similar singers like Caustic Resin's Brett Netson or Slanted and Enchanted–era Stephen Malkmus.

Rachel, you ONLY got Josh right!

Well, so much for my productiveness. . . sigh. It's the general theme of my day.
