The Campaign Begins
Team Nickels has registered its pro-Alaskan Way tunnel campaign and has already started raising money for a likely November showdown between the tunnel and a rebuilt viaduct. Prepare for a campaign blitz: They’ve already spent $25,000 on focus groups.
Of course, who needs campaign contributions when you have your very own publicly funded PR machine?
How many options will City Council place on November ballot? They do not have to use the advisory ballot at all. WSDOT and Mayor prefer six-lane tunnel. Della prefers six-lane replacement viaduct. The People's Waterfront Coalition suggests arterial and transit improvements, but the state seems to imply that their money ($2B) would go elsewhere. Some like the retrofit. That's four options. I prefer a fifth option: a four-lane tunnel with ramps to Elliott and Western avenues and dynamic tolling added to the bypass tunnel of the EIS. The replacement viaduct is too ugly; the six-lane tunnel is too costly; the PWC option loses the state money. we need the Goldilocks option: not too hot and not too cold. A four-lane tunnel seems just right.
