Feingold in Ballard. Cantwell in Absentia

Posted by on May 19 at 16:06 PM

The Cantwell rally tomorrow at Ballard’s Whittier Elementary (1320 NW 75 ST.) just keeps getting weirder. It’s awkward enough that anti-Iraq-War Sen. Russ Feingold is the guest speaker. Additionally, the event is supposed to give way to an afternoon of doorbelling for Cantwell by fired up volunteers.

This is something like winning a date w George Clooney, but he gets sick, and so Carrot Top shows up at your door. (Hat tip: Wm. Steven Humphrey.)

Goldy from Horsesass dressed me down for questioning the Cantwell event. He wrote:

No, it’s not weird. The best way to support the efforts of Senators like Russ Feingold is to give him a Democratic majority in the Senate. And the best way for WA voters to help do this is to reelect Maria Cantwell. Feingold ain’t stupid. Posted by: Goldy | May 17, 2006 01:59 PM

I responded:

Goldy,
OK, not weird…How about ironic?
Cantwell is having trouble getting volunteers thanks to her position on the war. So, she brings out someone with the exact opposite position to drum up volunteers on her behalf.
Feingold may not be stupid. But Cantwell sure seems to think anti-war voters are.

Anyway, here’s a nice detail: Cantwell’s not going to be there.
Now, that’s weird, right?

How’s this theory: Cantwell’s not going to be there, so the protesters don’t show up.

Any particular offical reason given for
the no show...?

Or maybe she's having second thoughts about associating with the "Impeachment" wing of the Democratic party.

My understanding was that Feingold's appearance at the rally was booked rather last minute, and that Cantwell has several other campaign events elsewhere in the state.

However, Cantwell and Feingold will be at a fundraiser together on Sunday.

Ironic, I suppose. But not weird.

Yes, it is very weird, Josh. A senior senator from a different state comes to your state for the purpose, in part, to give you support for your re-election....and you can't show up?

As a junior senator bidding for re-election, you pass up the local and national media opportunity of being in the company of the senior senator?

I don't care if you're bleeding from every orifice, you get your butt there.

No, there is more to this story then we are being given. It is weird and something is not right.

That is so strange. But no one is really sticking up for her in the political world; not even Patty Murray (who thinks very highly of her), whom I really thought would.

She really stepped in shit, and she knows it...

You can bet that when Bill Clinton is in town, Cantwell won't be avoiding him. She'll be right by his side. And considering that the invitation looks just like a wedding invitation, she'll probably be wearing her bridal colors.

Cantwell is using Feingold. It's rather sick. She had a tough time after Kerry was here stumping for her because she basically shit on everything he said about pulling the troops out of Iraq. And of course, she hates all the liberal Dems in Seattle. So, she's boxed herself into a corner. Instead of engaging on the issues where the liberals (the majority of the King Co. Voters - the biggest block in the state) are at odds with her, she shuns us and thinks we'll come to her aid in November. Think again, Maria. Her campaign staff plays very dirty. And this debacle, dissing Feingold, is just more proof of their antagonisism and ineptitude. At the rate she's offending everyone in the party, she'll be lucky to beat McGavick by the same slim margin she squeaked by with in 2000.

As Josh reprises his weird and stupid assertions -- excuse me, "weird" and "stupid" assertions, I'll reprise my pending probe of same in the earlier thread:

Which of the following is weirder and/or more stupid?
(A) Believing that people who disagree on one thing can still agree and work together on other things?
(B) Believing that people who disagree on one thing necessarily cannot agree and work together on any other thing?
C) Believing that anyone who acts as if (A) is true necessarily does so only because he/she assumes everybody else is stupid?

I also noted factual difficulties with the "weird and stupid" thesis ... including the fact that Cantwell's position, Feingold's position and Kerry's position(s) are not as far apart as characterized here.

Josh?

that's true about Patty Murray. I met her earlier this year and I asked her what she thought about Cantwell's vote. she looked at me like she was completely surprised that I asked it. she never did answer me. there were other people around her so I just got the hint and walked away. but I really wanted to hear what she'd say. too bad she didn't answer.
