Slog - Comments on Critical Line (With a Nod Toward Mass)

Last week, a new contemporary art gallery opened in Tacoma, bringing the total of contemporary galleries, and really, the total of notable walk-in galleries outside of museums, to two (the good non-walk-in spaces are Tollbooth Gallery, a video-and-paperworks kiosk on the street; and Tacoma Contemporary's Woolworth Windows). The newest spot is Critical Line at 741 St Helens, run by the guys who invented Tollbooth about two years ago. The other gallery, which opened less than a year ago, is Icebox Contemporary Art at 301A Puyallup Ave, run by curator Tracey Fugami and artist Eugene Parnell. New ventures in Tacoma always...

Great Tacoma report, Jen! As you suggest, we should all go down there from time to time and visit, not because we 'should' but because it is actually worthwhile.

I only go to Tacoma to see the Rainiers play. Sorry.

Also, the bus service to and from Tacoma is a pain in the ass.

The bus service to Tacoma is awesome. Hop on an express downtown, the buses are super snazzy and comfy. Once you get to the transit center in Tacoma, light rail links you directly up to downtown. How could it be any easier?

Odd as it may sound, I've come to associate Tacoma with art. And even odder, I've come to this association without associating Dale Chihuly with art. (Oh, that came out wrong. I like Chihuly.)

I've been more impressed with the exhibits at the Tacoma Art Museum than the exhibits at SAM, like the recent Marsden Hartley show and the current "Great American Thing" show, which hopefully I will see a second time this weekend before it closes (last day May 21).

As long as I'm in town, I might as well check out something like Critical Line. Thanks for the info, Jen.

Thank you for giving T-town the recognition it deserves. I'm from Puyallup and spent a small stint working at the Museum of Glass (before moving on to Bellingham, of all places) and I think things are finally starting to speed up. My father recently moved to an apartment on St. Helens and I can't tell you how much I actually ENJOY going to Tacoma, now. Not because I get to spend quality time with pappy, either - it's the art/music scene sprouting there that makes the trip less painful and the city more vibrant. Keep exposing contemporary gallery spaces and giving a heads up on the new exhibits happening at TAM. I appreciate it and I'm sure every breathing progressive does as well.
