Because This Never Happened Before That Craig Newmark Fella Came Along.

Robert Jamison is shocked - shocked, I tell you! - to find that sex workers advertise on the web.

I just thought they were being friendly - you mean to tell me they're sex workers?

Next thing you know, you'll tell me all those people who wave to me and wink at me on Aurora aren't just friendly like we are in Fremont ...

I'm shocked.

"I just thought they were being friendly ..." Yes, gentle Will, you're right. Jamieson is wrong. And all those people who wave to you and wink at you on Aurora are just friendly like you are in Fremont.

All the horizontal entrepreneurs who advertise in The Stranger, however, are supperating sluts. Buyer beware.

I love that Jamison brought up the anti-discrimination housing lawsuit in Chicago. The lawsuit points to discriminatory roommate ads, even ads seeking a "nice" or "quiet" roommate. I guess they have a point. That is extremely discriminatory towards loud assholes.

But "loud assholes" are not a protected class, as are all of the groups it is illegal to discriminate against. It's perfectly legal and often appropriate to discriminate against unprotected classes.

And we're not going after the city of Seattle for failing to fully police Aurora Avenue? They're just as "culpable" as he claims Craig Newmark is: find me one city employee who doesn't know about prostitution on Aurora, and then show me how diligently they're working to stop it.

Shared living spaces have a lot more leeway when it comes to discrimination. For instance, two girls could advertise that they're looking for another female to share their apartment. However, a landlord could not advertise that she's going to rent a 1-br apartment only to women.

Suits based on ads for room or house mates are going to be non-starters.
