AT&T Spying Exposed

Posted by on May 22 at 11:05 AM

This seems big.

In 2003 AT&T built “secret rooms” hidden deep in the bowels of its central offices in various cities, housing computer gear for a government spy operation which taps into the company’s popular WorldNet service and the entire internet. These installations enable the government to look at every individual message on the internet and analyze exactly what people are doing. Documents showing the hardwire installation in San Francisco suggest that there are similar locations being installed in numerous other cities.

Says Americablog:

They’re spying on EVERYTHING that happens on the Internet, EVERYTHING you do, that means emails, chats, IMs, Web sites you visit, pictures you send, and any video chats you have.

With my computer use and bland things I do and visit and when you multiply that by a million or two, what are they monitoring that is so bad?

If you are a terrorist, I would think it foolish to communicate by internet.

Don't fool yourself on your own importance. I did for awhile but now am sure that the government isn't after me.

there's the proof from the leaker

How is Microsoft working with the government to make this spying on people through computers possible? Who at Microsoft is getting paid to help the government spy on us?

that's not the point t & j.

next you'll have us believe it's okay for the gov to install cameras in our homes in case we ever do something wrong.

I'm certainly not afraid of any gov't agency compiling a list of the smutty websites I view, BUT I hate the spirit of this. I may not be doing anything important, but I hate the idea that Big Bro can spy on anyone they deem a "threat." That is NOT America. I want it back! ITMFA!

Uh, is this real?

Very real. ATT had a judge place a GAG order on the EFF not to release the documents to the press, but the judge made a very narrow ruling that only EFF could not release the document.

so WIRED did.

also ATT wanted the EFF to return any documents and prevent Klein from releasing the info to anyone else, but the judge denied the request.

Yes, it's real. One should also point out they've admitted they're wiretapping the land lines and cell phones and computers of reporters too.

I've been in the shack at Yakima.

T & J - I don't for a moment worry that the Govt. is "after me", but if i had any political ambitions this would freak me out. I mean who ever thought that my late night drunken sojurn thru the steamy pages of www.insertpornonamehere.com would cost me the presidency in 2012! I worry more for the future Gary Harts, or even Slick Willy Clintons, who i'd like to have in office despite the fact they like to have some sweet tang on the side. I guess if i was confident my government was policing terrorists and not morals i'd be less worried about this. As it stands i can't imagine how this information would NOT be mis-used.

Our attorney general alberto gonzales said over the weekend it is perfectly ok to prosecute reporters who publish leaks ... hmm, I wonder how they'd be able to get that kind of info.

we're losing our country day by day, hour by hour.

Unfortunately, T&J is probably in the majority in this country. In times like these people are all too willing to welcome Big Brother with open arms.

G.W. Bush is probably praying for another attack on American soil so that he can get some Jar Jar in congress to grant him emergency powers. I'm surprised we haven't heard about him trying to get Presidential term limits repealed as well. The man's ambitions to be Emperor are pretty clear.

Whoever gets elected in 2008 better know how to get crap stains out of 200-year-old documents, because the Bush administration is just going to keep wiping its ass with the Constitution until the very end.

man, this is real. just go check out the wired.com link in the story. then read the Washington Post blogs with article links that back it.

Now that we're building the Berlin Wall ... um Mexico Wall sorry ... can we start giving our atheletes steroids like good commies, comrade Bush?

Most Soviets had nothing to fear from the KGB.

Most Germans had nothing to fear from Hitler.

/Godwin rules.
