Albert Gore, Superstar

Posted by on May 18 at 17:23 PM

From The New Republic:

AL GORE’S MASTERWORK:

I hope this doesn’t sound too Arianna-like. But last night, I went to a screening of the Al Gore movie. And I found myself walking out in a strange mood. I had just seen a movie featuring a politician … and there wasn’t a trace of snark or cynicism coursing through my body. The film has genuine rhetorical power. It builds an incredibly frightening case without hints of fear-mongering or over-wrought moments. Because Gore is truly self-deprecating, the movie doesn’t ever feel like an ego-trip—although it does occasionally look like a giant product placement for Apple. At any rate, I walked out of the movie and decided to sell my car and begin otherwise preparing for our planet’s impending doom. I know this praise isn’t so unexpected coming from TNR. But I think the movie has the potential to become a seminal political document—a cinematic Silent Spring. It will certainly change elite opinion.—Franklin Foer

Be sure to read Arianna's assessment of Al Gore and his movie on the Huffington Post. She adequately paints Hillary as a phony.

eewwwww...

Please leave the liberal scaremongering to the hippies at The Weakly.

And l337 opinion is what decides elections... oh wait, no it isn't.

Ah, Gomez, still railing against any and all political discussion that isn't directed squarely at you. If you aren't interested in what smart people read and think about, don't read it.

That's pathetic. You'd think that writers at TNR would be informed enough to realize what a serious problem global warming is without having to wait for a movie to tell them about it. These are the same type of people that saw "Crash" and were surprised to learn that there's still racism.

Been a while since you snarked me, Fnarf. What took you?

New Republic's hardly mainstream media, and both sources of news have their flaws. Elite opinion? Do you and Dan really let 'elite' people decide your opinion for you?

Gore/Barak 08 - yeah, now that sounds good

Busy, Gomez, busy. But tell me, what does "hardly mainstream media" have to do with anything? Would you be MORE interested if it was in the New York Post? Why? TNR is one of the magazines that smart people read, on both sides of the aisle, and articles there very much DO impact the debate in Washington DC.

It's not about "letting 'elite' people decide" for me; it's about following the issues where they really happen. As near as I can tell, by "elite" you think you mean "those snobs who think they know everything" but what it really means is "the smart people who actually matter".

If you think you're going to get to the White House without those pesky "elites", you ought to run down and sign up with the LaRouchies right now.

"I know this praise isn’t so unexpected coming from TNR ..."

Masterful understatement. Slog's 'Pope Benedictus' semen smear (find it above, if you want to lose lunch) is utterly inapplicable to Benedict, but is utterly applicable to the homoerotic and pedophilic petting between TNR's Marty Peretz & Weird Al Gore. They've been stroking each other since preschool (aka Harvard.)
