A Diamond in the Dirt

Posted by on May 16 at 12:04 PM

Courtesy of DMZ over at the indispensable Mariners blog U.S.S. Mariner comes this photo of a promotional event at yesterday’s Tacoma Rainiers game:

What’s happening is women are desperately digging through the infield with plastic spoons in the hopes of finding a buried diamond ring.

As promotional events go, it’s both strange and sad. Still, it’s better than the Mariners’ terminally lame grounds crew dance routine they inflict upon their fans every single goddamn game. That needs to stop NOW.

The grounds crew dance is hilarious! Cease your haterade at once.

The M's ground crew dance is an embarrassment! Unattractive and untalented people should not dance with rakes to lame songs in public.

I agree -- END IT NOW!

you have finally convinced me without a doubt that seattle sports really do suck and I am not missing anything I don't desperately want to miss.

The Dancin' Dirtpushers are the least of the Mariners' shitty sideshow problems. They need to cease the silly fake hydroplane races, the hattrick and Dave's Trivia before they think about axing the dirtpushers.

Or how about focusing on the GAME like they do in other cities?

Clearly, none of you have been to a Mariners game lately. I haven't seen the dance once this year. And yes, it did get old.

I couldn't agree with you more, Bradley. The routine has become as embarassing as the Mariners' play. In fact there may be a direct
correlation between the beginning of the grounds-keepers' dance routine several years back and the demise of Mariner ball playing capabilities.

What really irritates the crap out of me is the God Bless America sing-a-long during the seventh inning stretch. It sounds like a damn funeral dirge. Kate Smith must roll over in her grave everytime the Mariners escort someone out to lead the crowd. It absolutely makes me cringe to have to listen to 19,500+/- people follow along like it's a Holy Joe church hymn. Fer Chrissakes. It's not, dammit!

Here's an idea, instead of the grounds crew doing a dance routine, have Beltre, Sexton and Suzuki go out everynight and do a dance routine at second base for the crowd until they get their numbers up.

here's an idea guys. DON'T GO TO WEEKEND GAMES!

those are the only games where they do the "dance" and sing "god bless america".

they don't do either of those on weeknight games. period. not even in the summer.

i do like digital dave, especially when he makes balloon animal hats. but it would be nice if the crowd cheered as much for their teams own home runs as much as they cheer for either hat trick or hydroplanes.

that's truly lame.

also tuesday night games are great for kids, 'cause they have special items at the souvenir stands for $2.00, so when your kid is annoying the crap out of you to get him something, you just get the cheapest thing and...ta da! they're happy.

Daranee, their dance routine this half of the season is done to something off the Grease soundtrack, and I would know because I went to a game a few weeks ago and saw them do so.

HMA, the excess of between-inning distractions is probably the reason the fans don't spontaneously cheer for the team. The only time they get loud is when the big screen flashes MAKE SOME NOISE or LET'S HEAR IT. It conditions most of the casual fans, in Pavlovian fashion, to only cheer when the flashy big screen shows them something exciting or tells them to cheer.

The grounds crew dance is to an edit of "Greased Lightning" (edited so that nobody is getting "lots of tit")--but, as mentioned above, it certainly isn't trotted out every game...

Similarly, "God Bless America," is only on Sunday games...or on "Salute To Armed Forces" night.

I'm not a big fan of Digital Dave Trivia and I wish they'd change the hat trick...but as far as the hydros go...I've got to say that this is absolutely the BEST year ever...as my "red" boat is KICKING ASS. Suck it yellow and green boat fans--SUCK IT!

And, as far as people cheering only when the score board tells them to...well, frankly...how much has there been to cheer for on the field this year? Trust me...when we see something worth cheering, we cheer... It's hard to really put your heart and soul into stomping your feet for anemic hitting Richie Sexson staring at another called third strike to end a promising rally.

If the M's start winning games, nobody will be bitching about who dances or what's on the scoreboard...

The team has done relatively well on the road this year. However, they get home and suddenly they can't hit.

The stadium is like a church from first pitch on, unless something's playing on the big screen. You think that downer environment, where the M's are the sideshow rather than the attraction, gets the players down and it affects their play? The former Montreal Expos had trouble at home because no one came to their games and there wasn't much vocal support.
