Wal-Mart: A Little Less Despicable

Posted by on April 4 at 12:32 PM

From the The Huffington Post:

Standing up to protests from a prominent Christian organization, Wal-Mart is not only carrying the DVD of Brokeback Mountain in its over 3,600 American stores, it is featuring ads for the film in the front of its stores. 138 million Americans pass through the front of these stores every week.

According to the L.A. Times, the American Family Association accuses Wal-Mart of pushing a gay agenda and is encouraging its purported 3 million members to boycott the store.

This probably has more to do with the almighty dollar than standing up to intolerance, but it’s still a victory.

"Three Million Members" my Ass. AFA bases that number on how many email addresses are in their email database. They don't reveal the number of opens on their campaigns, the number of bounced email address, the number of duplicates, or the number of people, like me, who subscribe just to see who they are attacking that day.

As far as Wal-Mart goes, I still won't shop there. Those stores smell, and are full of trash: Both the merchandise and the customers.

Just like those "members" couldn't give two shits the impact Wal-Mart has on the world, I doubt most could care less about certain DVD's being sold. Cheap crap is what they want, end of story.

All seven of the ACTIVE members of the AFA, who will carry out this boycott to the fullest, will no doubt bring the mighty Wal-Mart to its knees, just like they have in all of their thousand other boycotts.

But it's fun to see the equally blinkered "end of story" pinhead reaction from the other extreme here on slog.

Good. Maybe these fundie yahoos will finally get the message that corporations like Wal*Mart don't give a flying fig about "morality" if it stands in the way of their true diety, the "almighty dollar".

I'm envisioning hordes of pissed off fundies picketing W*M's across the country...

...And it makes me smile.

"I'm envisioning hordes of pissed off fundies picketing W*M's across the country..."

It couldn't happen. Where would they buy the supplies for the picket lines? ;-)

Do I missunderstand you're comment FNARF, or you're negating my assumption that people shop only shop at Wal-Mart because it's inexspensive?

I had difficulty figuring out what you meant, Doug, because you appear to have left several words out of your original post; is it supposed to be the "members" (of what?) or Wal-Mart's customers, or Wal-Mart itself, who could or couldn't care less? "Cheap crap" is only the beginning of the story here.
For instance, Wal-Mart only sells expurgated CDs, so they obviously do care about what they sell.
I seem to detect a lot of unspecific contempt for low-cost merchandise and the people who buy it. Is a copy of "Brokeback Mountain" any worse if it's bought at Wal-Mart than at Sears or Target?

FNARF: If anyone has contempt for the low wage earners it is Wal-Mart itself. Just look at how they treat their own employees.

Wal-Mart treats its employees rather well, on the whole. For low-skilled workers with only a high school education (if that), Wal-Mart offers access to health benefits, starting pay that exceeds minimum wage, and opportunities for advancement. In most of the US, that's about as good a deal as they can reasonably expect, with or without a union.

Wal-Mart supercenters save an average household over $2K per year -- which means that in a small town like the one I grew up in, it represents a major improvement in people's quality of life.

Good Lord, Timothy Hulsey! Don't present facts in a left-wing, Wal-Mart-bashing blog! Leftists are allergic to facts, reason and logic. But they sure look cute in their dreadlocks and Birkenstocks, protesting every other day.
