Rush to Judgment

Posted by on April 28 at 17:19 PM

Rush Limbaugh was arrested today on prescription drug charges, with his lawyer saying he has reached a deal with prosecutors that will eventually see the charges dismissed if he continues treatment for drug addiction.

The subject of a three-year investigation by prosecutors, Mr. Limbaugh turned himself in to authorities on a warrant charging him with fraud to conceal information to obtain prescriptions, said Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Jail.

—snip—

Before his own problems became public, Mr. Limbaugh had decried drug use and abuse and had mocked President Bill Clinton for saying he had not inhaled when he tried marijuana. He often made the case that drug crimes deserve punishment.

Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country,” Mr. Limbaugh said on his short-lived television program on Oct. 5, 1995. “And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs.”

He added, “And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.”

On the same show, he commented that the statistics that show blacks go to prison more often than whites for the same drug offenses only illustrated that “too many whites are getting away with drug use.”

Full Story. (hat tip - Nat)

La la la…

And yes, yes, drug use is a stupid crime, but Rush Limbaugh is a stupid man, and besides, fuck him.

Actually his show is funny, entertaining, and pretty darn insightful.

So you say "Fuck Him" and go pout that he has such a large audience, and then demonize him - but do you ever listen to his show?

Hypocrisy should be a death penalty offense.

He didn't exactly start using drugs for recreational purposes. (Not that I like defending the bastard.)

are you serious, ditto head? do you listen to his show? insightful is the LAST word i would use.

and that deal shit is bullshit. i work at the state attorney's office, and fraudulently acquiring perscription medicine is a big fucking deal, and for good reason.

Personal drug addiction is medical and not criminal. For all.

He is not worth spitting on, but his problem is still medial not criminal.

Don"t give away fighting the injustice of our drug laws because Rush is a pig.

Notice -- It seems without fanfare or notice to the US, Mexico just made small amounts of drugs of many kinds legal. Personal use concept.

Should improve Cancun vacations by a factor of 100.

I agree that it's a medical problem, and I will always fight the injustice of our drug laws, but 1) that doesn't make me feel bad for Rush, particularly given his unbelievable hypocrisy on the issue, and 2) it doesn't look like he'll be much of a victim of those laws anyway. He has powerful friends and lots of money, so he'll get off easy. So, if anything, his case points up another unjust aspect of our drug laws, i.e. selective enforcement.

In the end, whatever we think of the laws, Rush broke the law and he's a chest-beating law-and-order hardcore conservative. Considering his very public, very loud, and very influential positions on these kinds of activities by others, I must reiterate -- FUCK HIM. Let him rot.

if you want to talk about legalizing drugs, then that's fine. but fraudulently acquiring perscription medicine is different. it's dangerous, since you could be getting medicine that is not right for you. medicine is different from recreational drugs, and should be treated as such.

I should have noted that my comments were about Rush generally. To answer KonstantConsumer, yes I do listen to his show and I'm a moderate fag to boot! Yes, he spews out multiple inane suppostions. However if you never listen to "them" you become unchallened. Listening to Rush tear-to-shreds the current Congressional leadership should be required - because the Democratic party is still running as if it was still 2004 against Bush and not listenting to the needs of its moderate base. Case in point: Hillary Clinton, of all people, has to now try to win the hearts of the left wing.
