Regime Change in Iran? I Know History Repeats Itself—the 2nd Time as Farce. But What Happens When the 1rst Time (Iraq) was a Farce?

Posted by on April 8 at 11:15 AM

All-star journalist Seymour Hersh has a whopping scoop in the latest New Yorker documenting President Bush’s intent to bomb Iran and spark regime change. Oh, and bomb Iran with nukes. Great hearts and minds move.

One former defense official, who still deals with sensitive issues for the Bush Administration, told me that the military planning was premised on a belief that “a sustained bombing campaign in Iran will humiliate the religious leadership and lead the public to rise up and overthrow the government.ā€¯ He added, “I was shocked when I heard it, and asked myself, `What are they smoking?’ ā€¯

nuke someone to prevent nuclear war. perfect.

in some ways, though, this actually is history repeating itself. sy hersch the scoop reporter. the us thinking that preemptive bombing raids that include civilian targets and infrastructure will make life so intolerable that regime change will happen from below without us troops, and in a way the us would support. "Hearts and minds..."

This is a level of insanity we can't allow to happen.

so the plan is to... shock and awe the populace into seeing the "inferiority" of their leaders...

strikes me as the "it wasn't a bad idea the first time around, it just wasn't shocking enough" theory.

Well, insane it is. However, the administration has to bring home thousands of troops from Iraq. They need to do this for 2 reasons. First, the troops are starting ask more questions about their role and re-enlistment is falling. Secondly, bringing them home before elections is going to be popular and might raise a few votes for Republicans.

So, if he's serious about Iran, Bush needs to try a tactic that he thinks won't involve troops (he's smoking Rummy's grass, if you ask me - Rummy is a technologist who thinks war can be handled primarily through bombs; not troops). This leaves him with very few options - bombing is the way to go.

Bush also needs to think about the possibility of a loss of one or both houses of Congress in November. This means a bombing run would likely begin in October because he might have a showdown with Democrats post elections.

Plus, an October run would have the "benefit" of being before elections. It might provide him with a boost in the polls. He'll argue that he needs a Republican Congress for him to win this war and he'll argue that the security of the country is still at risk and that Republicans handle security better. Rove has already said that he's happy to run on security concerns.

Cynical? Possibly. But does anyone really think that Rove gives a rat's ass about Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan? No. He's an ideologue who wants to win elections. From his perspective, Republicans are pretty desperate at the moment. Desperate times call for desperate measures. From his perspective and that of the President's, this could be a win on several fronts. Will Americans put up with it?

We are in the danger zone of the end of the second term.

The stakes are high for the neocons. Loot, empire. personal wealth and power are just the beginning.

Iraq has petered out. America is scared of Iran, and has a long history of trading insults.

The Euro press, German, has been reporting real prep. for war with Iran for three months. Thede are likely leaks to the media from the Euro nation spy systems as they panic over Amrican war fever.

If you want to avoid the elections, this war gambit could lead to massive street protests and give an excuse for martial law.

And massive arrests for the new camps they have been building.

Even today, Bush and Cheney heavily lace every appearance with we at war talk. Over and over. Seeemingly up to now it has worked.

Can it work again?

And what a partner Bush has with the mad-man Ahmadinejad: a total eclipse of the world.

In history it's first time tragedy, second time farce, third time is horror. Which is what it will be if Bush attacks Iran with nukes.

I'm really beginning to think that the fundamentalists permeating this administration believe they are facilitating the Apocalypse and speeding Jeebus' return.

That sounds like a great way to create untold suffering among Iranians. Of course, the unmitigated suffering will make them turn even more to religion. Many Iranians, and other Muslims, will become enraged and we'll have succeeded in creating even more terrorists. Yay for Team Bush!

Whatever they're smoking back there, clearly it's been wrapped in a 217 year-old rolling paper...

Correction: 219 year-old rolling paper.

It astonishes me that there are only ten
(now eleven) comments here.

Bush is betting that his base will overlook his foreign and domestic shortcomings if he can bring about Armageddon and the Rapture before the next congressional elections.

Then he won't care.

Friends don't let insane WH occupiers nuke other countries for made-up lies.
