Hammered

Delay is out.

Rep. Tom DeLay, whose iron hold on the House Republicans melted as a lobbying corruption scandal engulfed the Capitol, told TIME that he will not seek reelection and will leave Congress within months….

DeLay’s fall has been stunningly swift, one of the most brutal and decisive in American history. He had to give up his title of Majority Leader, the No. 2 spot in the House Republican leadership, in September when a Texas grand jury indicted him on charges of trying to evade the state’s election law.

Does this defuse the much-anticipated Democratic Revolution of 2006 or does it fuel it?

Fuels, fuels!

Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

Now, if Bush would just take the hint...

This is great news for the R's. Delay was a big problem now he's gone.

Delay's gone my ass. He'll be on his way to jail and pictures of him will run in every CD that's being contested. Reichert & Delay, Hastings & Delay, McMorris & Delay... over and over.

!!!!!!!

Oh frabjous Day! Callou, callay!

first, let me say that i hope it helps the dems, and probably will. however, even if it didn't, it would still be a good thing to get horrible people like him out of politics.

This only works for the D's if they grow a pair and actually hit the Rethugs with it...but it's still SWEET!

Whether it is "good for Democrats" is the kind of question Republicans would ask.

The important question is whether it is good for the country. And of course the answer is yes.

You have to ask the kinds of questions the Republicans would ask.

Know Your Enemy.

Glad to see you post this!

I think this means that there's some more criminal legal shit coming his way.

i just don't buy that he made this decision after lots of prayer.

I hope there isn't another guy like him in the House waiting to rise to prominence. I was glad when Newt Gingrich was gone but DeLay just took his place.

From this day forward, TODAY shall be known as: Christmas.

Reading the NY Times this morning, Delay appears to have made the decision after looking at his numbers in the race in November. My guess is that he thinks that he'll beat the legal rap, though I hope to see him prosecuted still.

No, he jumped out like the coward that he is because he saw that a Democrat was about to win his district. Rather than take the beating himself, he'll step aside and let another Republican get his ass whooped. That is good news for the Democrats.

Delay, then, will face his legal troubles which he hopes to beat. If so, then he hopes to come back for another election when the climate is better for Republicans. Cold political calculation coupled with face saving.

he may be gone, but no one's going to undo the gerrymandering of texas anytime soon. he had his role, just like newt gingrich.

My only regret is that there isn't a prosecutor with enough balls to charge the son of a bitch with treason.

Amber--balls isn't the question. A prosecutor would have to have probable cause to charge him w/treason.

I'm a little worried that he's going to become a martyr. That's why I hope to see the prosecutor put his feet to the fire.

Maybe he just missed exterminating bugs. It's a good day for the Dems- a bad day for the termites.

Delay deserves to resign in shame and dishonor-- which is what just happened. As the story unfolds for him it will only get worse.

He is so utterly linked to so many Republican's who took money from his PAC that this won't be good for Republican's. He was a prominent and highly regarded leader in the party. There is NO WAY around it.

Delay is one of the biggeet evil bastards out there. He weilded power in a very unsavory way. His actions are what makes people hate the government. This is like getting the braintrust of a terroritt cell. He calls the shots. Now he is castigated.

Oh people, this is a damn damn good thing. Even if we getlittle spill over effect, just getting rid of Delay from Congress is a good thing for America.

notice that he's not quitting now, so that he can get another R for the seat.

oh, and as to the gerrymandering of texas, my bet is that since Texas is as mixed as Florida is, that Katrina's refugees are going to make a lot of R seats suddenly become D.

Please notice that troubled R's, at least since Nixon, tend to bail promptly at the mere appearance of impropriety. Gingrich guilty of nothing except bad manners and possible minor infractions of a minor House rule. Livingston guilty of nothing but youthful indiscretion. Lott guilty of nothing but free speech. Cunningham guilty as 'ell, of course; DeLay innocent until proved otherwise, which the Feds might do but partisan hack Ronnie Earl probably won't.

For D's, even a girl's corpse in a car isn't enough to push them back into shame & obscurity. Or, judging by levied fines, Washington State's 7th District congressman is 2 - 3 times as guilty as Gingrich, but voters in the 7th District don't care. Nor do they care that his junket to Baghdad in 2002, cheerleading for psychokiller Saddam, was bought and paid for with dollars that trickled down from Saddam's Baath Party.

PB, they have prozac for people like you.

& Viagra for people like you.

Note how laid back I was (Prozac had nothing to do with it) by leaving out Blue Dress Bill; Barney "Boy Toy" Frank (whose sweetie ran a brothel from Frank's apartment); Cynthia "Slugger" McKinney; Patrick "No Secrets" Leahy (who leaked classified information to the press ... where was Patrick Fitzgerald?); con man William Jefferson, D-LA ... etc.

All the above are still serving or were allowed to finish their terms.

PB: It's like this because Dems are hypocrites. The Repubs have to bail at the impression of an impropriety. Dems are cockroaches and stick together no matter what.

Since the Press supports this it'll stay the same for a long time.

It's deeper than hypocrisy, alas. History isn't written by the victors. It's written by the 'Crats, & they spin it any way they want.
