Coppola + Antoinette + New Order = Love

Posted by on April 21 at 15:24 PM

I like but don’t love Sofia Coppola, love but don’t worship New Order, and don’t know poo about Marie Antoinette.

Nevertheless, this preview for Sofia Coppola’s forthcoming Marie Antoinette, set to New Order’s “Age of Consent,” makes me swoon.

There's something about it, isn't there? I mean, jeez, even my Mom seemed excited by it. And you know my Mom...

So this preview was playing here in LA at our local arty theater before Walk the Line. As we left after the movie, we overheard a small group talking about hanging around for the start of the next showing to see the preview again. Clearly Ms. Coppola is onto something. Now, if only the whole movie were silent and set to relatively obscure pop music...

cool trailer and I agree about the strange choice of music (which I like)

what's the big deal? just looks like some big budget costume flick. i like new order, but i've got the album, don't need to watch a preview to hear it.

it's just so bold and gorgeous.

Agreed! I have to admit, when I first heard about this I kind of rolled my eyes. "Awesome. History for hipsters. Complete with zine-y poster art..."

But then I saw the preview and my brain just swooned. Bravo!

Looks like a good movie and I have faith in Sofia pulling this off - but even though I like New Order, putting pop/rock in a period movie soundtrack runs the danger of turning the movie into an extended MTV video - and that's an effect few can take seriously.

Swear to god, I'm an ADD asshole who didn't read your entire post and co-opted your highlighted use of "swoon" unbeknownst. NOT COPYING! Promise!

That said, you are completely right, Bauhaus. Lost in Translation was the same for me. Slathered, DEEPLY, in so much trendy bullshit that it ran the serious risk of putting off those of us who appreciate the gloss, but appreciate the lips more. Fortunately for me, I was sucked enough into the story's simple beauty to come full circle back into the gloss: "it's such a great story. And so PRETTY!" Here's hoping MA delivers in similar fashion.

And pardon me, I've been drinking wonderful cocktails at Liberty since 6. Tacky booths be damned! Y'all snobs don't know whatcher missin!

dave that was weird. she is totally turning into a film maker like her dad. big, bold fireworks spots, brightly lit night scenes. she is clearly as over the top as her dad.

when i first read your post i thought,
"oh she's doing the modern romeo and juliette type thing." it's so weird and such a mind fuck to see the clach of modern and period.

very strange.

Not surprising that Sofia Coppola's becoming a filmmaker like her dad, since her dad exec-produces her movies.
