Colbert Rips Bush Apart

Posted by on April 29 at 21:54 PM

…and the President just had to sit there and take it. This is a must-read. Via Americablog.

Colbert, who spoke in the guise of his talk show character, who ostensibly supports the president strongly, urged the Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, “and reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

Noting those low ratings, Colbert advised, “The glass isn’t half empty - it’s 68% empty. There’s still some fluid in there, but I wouldn’t drink it.”

He attacked those in the press who claim that the shake-up at the White House was merely re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. “This administration is soaring, not sinking,” he said. “They are re-arranging the deck chairs—on the Hindenburg.”

Go read the whole Editor & Publisher report. It’s hilarious. The best part?

As he walked from the podium, the president and First Lady gave Colbert quick nods, unsmiling, and left immediately.

Crooks and Liars is promising video soon. Holy shit, I can’t wait.

oh it was HILLARIOUS!!

why? cause it's all true.

Colbert was brilliant. Kauffman-esque, even. It will be replayed by C-Span at 2:30 AM PDT. Set your Tivo.

I was afraid that Colbert's schtick was going to turn into one of those reoccurring SNL skits that they keep revisiting until you end up hating it. But I gotta say, he's gone way beyond my expectations. The fake news just gets better and better...

Colbert is the new Ali G, but instead of being a characakture of a rapper or a stereotype of a foreign guy, he plays something so much more hilarious: a true believer of republican bullshit. When he's sitting across a table from the real thing, it's genius.

C&L has part of it up now.

Colbert & Helen Thomas both deserve effing medals for courage under fire, although more likely all they're going to get are a lot of weird clicking sounds on their phone lines from now until 2008.

Can you believe how funny Helen is, clomping through the parking lot in the chase scene? It blows my mind that this may be the most lengthy critique of the Iraq war that Bush has encountered, since he doesn't read newspapers. And look at Laura sitting there writhing in agreement.

An amazing performance. Colbert showed unbelievable balls, and the audience was SO uncomfortable, they absolutely couldn't believe what he was saying.

You're wrong, Dan. The best part was this one:

"I believe that the government that governs best is a government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."

ha ha ha! Worth staying up for! I loved the film and the uncomfortable audience shots peppered with nervous laughs.

fucking genius. see also his interview with bill kristol. absolutely incredible to see kristol's dumbfounded response to the question: "How's the New American Century?"

genius

Watched it twice last night on C-Span. Relentless and brave performance as well as hilarious. The audience seems appalled throughout. Never more than a chuckle. Really get a sense of the culture within 'the bubble'.

The republic needs an enema.

I haven't seen any footage, just read the transcript, but I'm awestruck. It's quite possibly the funniest thing in the history of the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe it's yogurt.

it's on youtube, i posted the links on this thread but i guess moderator didn't want them posted??

it was on c-span, that shit ain't copyrighted.

Best line:

Sir, pay no attention to the people who say the glass is half empty, because 32% means it's 2/3 empty. There's still some liquid in that glass is my point, but I wouldn't drink it. The last third is usually backwash.

Now that I've had a chance to listen to the entire thing, all I can say is, how do we keep this routine on-the-air 24/7 between now and November 2008?

It should be pointed out that the AP and Reuters have essentially ignored the Colbert part of this event. What will surely be recognized as classic American wit by future generations is patently ignored in both the AP and Reuters stories.

Lapdogs, indeed.

By *FAR* the best point in the article about the routine is:'In its report on the affair, USA Today asserted that some in the crowd cracked up over Colbert but others were "bewildered." Wolf Blitzer of CNN said he thought Colbert was funny and "a little on the edge."'

That's right folks... truth is just a "little on the edge" for America's main media.
