Best Punk Song Ever

Posted by on April 27 at 10:47 AM

Wire’s “Mr Suit.” So damned economical (85 seconds), so damned swift, so damned righteous, so damned uplifting. Check it out on the recently reissued and great-sounding “Original Masters” version of Pink Flag on Pink Flag Records. And while you’re at it, score Wire’s classic second and third albums, Chairs Missing and 154. Look for a feature on these timeless gems in next week’s Stranger.

Actually, that feature will be in the issue out May 10. Sorry.

Right the fuck on! Wire forever, man. I'm looking forward to the feature.

Best doo-wop song ever: "The Nobodies" by Marilyn Manson.

This old fogie says "Sonic Reducer" by the Dead Boys is the best punk song ever, but I'll check it out.

That's a hefty title--and one that will be argued over until the planet burns to a crisp. It could be said the honor really belongs to the Undertones for "Teenage Kicks." Or the Clash for "Know Your Rights."

Personally, my two favorite songs of all time are G'nR's "Welcome to the Jungle" and Ronnie Spector's "Be My Baby," neither of which are even remotely punk, so I'll shut up now.

Wire were arty gents who were simultaneously deconstructing (maybe even mocking) punk and making some of the best specimens of the genre. That's genius.

Thank you Segal. My favorite band of all time, period. Great fucking song, great fucking band.

In the last 18 months: "new" material from Gang of Four, a live album from Kraftwerk, a new album from The Fall and all of this material from Wire, including a double CD sometime in May from live shows in the 70's. What a great time for it to be 1981 again. If Ian Curtis came back from the dead I'd be in Heaven- oh wait, Interpol just released the "new" Joy Division album. Sorry.

"Live" Wire recordings I've heard by Wire on bootlegs past have all been terrible, not just in sound quality but their performance as well - it'd be nice to hear an "officail" release. Mr. Segal is correct, first 3 Wire records are great (the first is brillinat, second two are spotty, but included tracks making them worth owning regardless IMO).

I even read the Wire biography. God I'm a dork.

...and I love typos. Egads.
