NEW YORK (AFP) - Tick, 20,000 dollars, tock, another 20,000 dollars. So rapid is the rise of the US national debt, that the last four digits of a giant digital signboard counting the moving total near New York's Times Square move in seemingly random increments as they struggle to keep pace. The national debt clock, as it is known, is a big clock. A spot-check last week showed a readout of 8.3 trillion -- or more precisely 8,310,200,545,702 -- dollars ... and counting. But it's not big enough. Sometime in the next two years, the total amount of US government...

I'm constantly amazed that Republicans maintain this ridiculous reputation as being more fiscally responsible than Democrats. My brother, who is fairly middle of the road, and quite liberal on social issues, voted for Bush last time because he thought Republicans are better for the economy.

WTF!!!

Glad to see the Rs are doing such a fine job.
*rolls eyes*

The thing is, the Republican message of "wasteful government spending" resonates loudest when it's accompanied by a chorus or two of "the undeserving poor". They get away with it because everybody can share the outrage about those damn people on welfare driving Cadillacs. Railing about people getting good things they don't deserve always gets votes, even if the real waste is elsewhere. People don't really care about fiscal restraint; they just don't want people other than themselves getting any of it.

That's why the Republicans own the spending issue, even if they spend MORE than the Dems.

Notice that the only Dem to win the White House in the last 29 years ran against welfare and for welfare reform. Even though welfare as such is a drop in the ocean of goverment spending -- and most welfare even --nay, especially-- under Republicans, goes to rich old people.
