Transgender Question

Posted by on March 22 at 11:06 AM

I keep thinking about a line from the movie Transamerica where Bree is trying to get a form signed and she says something like “After my operation, even a gynecologist won’t be able to tell I wasn’t born a woman.”

Is this true? Accurate?
(I know my ignorance is showing, but I am asking out of real interest.)

no, it's not true. and I don't think it's supposed to be taken literally even in the context of the film.

Surgeons can make a very very good vulva and vagina that can pass a pretty close inspection by a gynecologist. Some transwomen of my acquaintance have had doctors examine them with no suspicion they had not had vaginas since birth. But even the best neo-vagina will be detectible (by a doctor - possibly not by a layperson) if it is checked closely enough.

It is quite easy to find pictures of surgery results on the web (try www.altermd.com) so that you can judge for yourself.
