Rachel Corrie Play Kicked Out of New York

Posted by on March 2 at 11:37 AM

God knows I’d hesitate before attending a play constructed from the diary entries of Gaza tank martyr Rachel Corrie, but this is some scary shit.

If only they'd have chosen to portray arabs & muslims as scary, bomb-throwing, inhuman extremists. _Then_ they'd get the backing of the entire "Freedom of Speech" Western World!

Why is this scary? I'm not debating - I just dont get it.

Thanks

The fact that New York Theater Workshop was so easily cowed is what's scary.

That *is* scary. David-- you have ties to the local theater community. Do you think there's any chance we could persuade them to bring it to the Puget Sound area?

Snep, that is a smashing idea.

Considering the success and acclaim the show got in its London run--as well as its now-you-see-it-now-you-don't booking at NYTW--I get the sense the producers/writers are aiming for the theatrical big time, and may not be amenable to a production at, say, Re-bar. But it never hurts to ask.

(And ACT should look into producing it ASAP...)

is rachel corrie the girl from evergreen state college who didn't see the bulldozer a'comin'?

why would anyone write a play based on her? she and her organization sounded like a bunch of dolts.

i could be wrong, but isn't this the same girl who worked with a faux ngo that eli did an expose on before working as a news writer for the stranger?

just seems like such a non story to me. angry theatre people can be harder to listen to. i love the drama of the writing in that gaurdian piece, no exact numbers, no real info, just...

"I'd heard from American friends that life for dissenters had been getting worse - wiretapping scandals, arrests for wearing anti-war T-shirts, Muslim professors denied visas. But it's hard to tell from afar how bad things really are. "

who's she hanging with? hammas?

Actually, you sound like a dolt, HMA. Someone who's ready to jump to a cheap conclusion after taking in the bare minimum of facts. Your questions signal your cursory understanding of Rachel, and I'll bet your understanding of the Middle East is even more naive, misinformed, and unrealistic than Rachel's could ever be.

One of the most impressive things that can be said about Rachel is that she put her life on the line for what she believed. This is in complete contrast to the soldiers and suicide bombers/terrorists, who kill for what they believe (even less can be said for many of the soldiers, the US especially, who have no real beliefs at all, except to get home in one piece. Much worse are the "independent contractors," commonly known as _mercenaries_, whose only belief is to make as much money as possible in their task of killing, harming, and torturing others.)

Rachel was not a person to force her beliefs on others, but to live up to her own moral standard at all costs. She was not there to martyr herself, she was not there to cause harm to others, she was there because she wanted to live in a better world. Whether she accomplished that is up for debate. That she was living up to her own standards of morality is not.

Which is far more than I can say about the vast majority of Americans. You strike me as a person with very little moral character, and if you do have ethics, I doubt very seriously your commiment to them. You are a perfect example of the moral malaise of America today, where having an opinion on something is the highest morality you aspire to. It's quite easy to sit back and sneer at others, it's something else to actually put your morals into action. America is quickly becoming a state of repression, where dissent is cheerfully & easily squashed. Of the people who are realizing this, very few are taking action, and even less are willing to put their life on the line, like Rachel did, in their pursuit of bringing freedom back to America. Unfortunately, this is what I think will be required, as the fucks who are in power right now are not going to want to give it up. Look for a "National Emergency" in late '07 or early '08 and the Bush cabal suspending the presidential election. I fear people like you, HMA, are the idiots who will be all too willing to allow this, and are thus the greatest traitors to America.

Mr. Bowman,
Don't you think issuing a moral and intellectual judgment on HMA on the basis of one short, and even humble--HMA himself says, "I could be wrong"--post is precisely a "jump to a cheap conclusion after taking in the bare minimum of facts"?

malaise... yes you're right. the rachel corrie sotry is a boring drag.

as is all the partying in palestine now that hamas is in power.

oy vey....
