Local Pharmacists Want Permission to Refuse Plan B Prescriptions

Posted by on March 15 at 11:22 AM

Check out this KOMO story, about the state pharmacy board considering a proposal that would permit pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for Plan B. (Thanks to AMERICAblog for the link.)

[S]ome pharmacists are stepping up and saying they won’t fill prescriptions on moral grounds.

Note to KOMO: Whiny right-wing pharmacists are not “stepping up” to fulfill perceived moral obligations. They’re stepping down from their professional responsibilities. They should be fired, not mollycoddled.

If you want a local pharmacist who’ll step up to his/her duties, check out Princeton University’s emergency contraception access list, complete with a special symbol for Washington State pharmacists who can dispense Plan B without a doctor’s prescription.

I do think this whole “moral objection” thing is a slippery slope. Some folks may be ok with pharmacists objecting to this drug, but what about others? If Tom Cruise were a pharmacist, he could object to dispensing anti-depressants. Perhaps other pharmacists could object to dispensing AIDS medicine. Other f’ed up pharmacists could say smokers brought on their own lung cancer, and refuse to dispense drugs to those patients. It’s bullshit! A pharmacist should be obligated to dispense any drug approved by the FDA.

The "moral grounds" argument goes beyond contraceptives (as if this wasn't heinous enough). A pharmacist refused to fulfill a routine prescription because it was written by a doc at a clinic that also does contraceptives and abortions. AIDS orgs are starting to worry that anti-gay pharmacists will refuse AIDS meds to people.

The fact that the WA Board of Pharmacy gets to make this key policy decison means no review by lawmakers. They seem to be leaning towards doing it.

Pharmacists should have the right not to fill any prescriptions that violate their religious beliefs. The way that they should do this is by NOT BECOMING PHARMACISTS. Alternatively, another way to allow religious extremist asshole pharmacists to not have to fill prescriptions for Plan B is to approve it for over-the-couter sales as the FDA's own expert advisory panel overwhelmingly recommended in 2004, a point that I'd like to see more people bringing up.

Fuck those assholes! I say revoke their licenses if they are unwilling to fill birth control presciptions.

Pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for "moral reasons" should have their licenses revoked for fraudently attempting to practice as a physician.
