For the first time since the attacks of Sept. 11, a major American museum has mounted an exhibition of contemporary art from the Islamic world, and appropriately, it's the Museum of Modern Art (NY). But MoMA is taking a beating from both critics and artists for Without Boundary: Seventeen Ways of Looking. (Lee Siegel's review in Slate is great—do the slide show, and Tyler Green's interviews with two irate artists are in a new piece about MoMA's geopolitics in the New York Observer.) The main criticism of the show is that its artists either live now or were educated in...

Thanks for the plug.

Tooba is probably be the best piece Neshat has ever done, the smartest response to 9/11 by anyone this side of Lari Pittman. Still, somehow, it's very rarely shown in the US. Don't miss it.

Comment by joe shoom

Didn't the Stranger do an article a couple years ago about an art gallery that took down an instillation the protested the distruction of the ancient Buddha's in Afghanistan over fear it would offend? It's odd that there wasn't more of an outcry over this. I've seen several shows that focused on the Israeli injustice towards Palestinians. Why do lefties usual look the other way when censorship is done to avoid things that might make Muslims uncomfortable? They don't advocate or condon censorship of injustices to protect the feelings of Christians or Jews.
