Brokeback High

Posted by on March 14 at 11:05 AM

A heterosexual highschool student in West Linn, Oregon, was expelled—expelled!—for making a film for a class project that included a gay “snuggle” scene. Rawstory.com has the details.

Is that actually legal? I don't know any of the laws down in Oregon, but I can't imagine that the school can just walk all over the 1st Amendment like that!

Actually, yes, a high school can walk all over the First Amendment. See Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S. 260 (1988).

Same-sex snuggling? Why, that's just a short step from OUTRIGHT TERRORISM.

Actually, there are few things better for an aspiring film maker than to get national exposure as a teenager. He can't even drink & he's already got 'name recognition'!

So, yes, it's deplorable that bigotry still exists, even among (*gasp*) high-school vice-principals. Stop the presses. Still, there is a huge upside to this, in giving Mr. Flyte exposure and a unique opportunity in learning how the media works (& possibly how to manipulate it) at a very young age. It's very possible we'll be hearing from him again.

You should know by now that the laws of free speech don't apply once you're in a classroom setting. At least that's the M.O. in schools across America. SHUT UP AND DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD!
