Blissin’ & Pissin’

Posted by on March 15 at 11:27 AM

On a flight to Austin (where I’m attending the SXSW music fest), I read an interview with film director David Lynch in United Hemispheres. In it he extols the bliss-inducing, stress-relieving, and intellect-enhancing powers of Transcendental Meditation (TM).

“This is so powerful,” Lynch gushes. “This bliss is physical, emotional, spiritual happiness. It gives a thrill of fulfillment and energy. This causes negativity to go like sunlight causes darkness to go.”

For Lynch, all it takes is 20 minutes in the morning and 20 more at night to attain this state of contentment and mental clarity. By the way, Lynch also admits to drinking 20 cups of coffee a day. Between all that blissin’ and pissin’, how does he find time to direct? Maybe that’s why his films take so long to complete…

Let me add that Smoosh is down in Austin TX for SXSW XX. -shoulda mentioned that before.

Hey, if someone derives that much positive energy from their spiritual practices, good for them. But regardless of that, I really can't help but snicker (or shake my head, or whatever) at an organization that charges hundreds of dollars for people to receive their own personal, "unique" chanting mantra that they are told never to reveal to another - because in reality, the same mantra has been given to thousands of other people on the basis of age.

Then there's the flying. People spend thousands of dollars to learn how to meditate or fly. This consists of reciting mantras while hopping up and down vigorously in the lotus position for hours on end. Unsurprisingly, many current and ex-members complain of chronic aches and spasms.

I mean, that's kid stuff compared to what other religions/spiritual organizations have accomplished (OMGZ, CRUSADES!) but it makes David Lynch all the more impressive. It's not just the blissin' and pissin'...it's the floatin' and throatin'.

Ugh, that was just a horrible attempt at rhyming. Sorry.

You must have missed Lynch's TM talk at the UW last November.

You can read a blog account of it here: http://trialsofdana.blogspot.com/2005/11/funding-transcendence.html
