Open House

Posted by on February 17 at 9:02 AM

State Representative Ed Murray (D-Seattle) still won’t say whether he’s going to give up his secure seat in the house and make a run for the state senate this fall. But insiders see the run as a sure thing, despite Murray’s very Hillary Clinton-esque ambiguity about his plans right now.

Which means two things, at least to the insiders. One: Murray will ride the wave of his recent successes on transportation and gay civil rights straight into the senate seat held by Pat Thibaudeau (D-Seattle), an aging legislator who hasn’t made a whole lot of noise in recent years. And two: In the meantime, the race for Murray’s open house seat will become one of the most exciting political brawls of the season.

One way you can tell how eager people are for Murray’s official announcement of his intentions (expected after the session ends March 9) is that most of the people who are serious about taking his current job aren’t waiting for any revelations from Murray. Here’s a list of the people who have filed to run for Murray’s seat even before he’s announced he’s leaving it, along with a run-down of how much money they’ve already raised:

Big-shot lawyer and gay rights activist Jamie Pedersen: $23,000

Democratic activist Lynne Dodson: $20,059.34

Former city councilman James Street: $17,739

King County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Bill Sherman: $10,327.73

Chair of the 43rd Disrtict Democrats, Richard Kelley: $6,710

Perennial candidate Linde Knighton: $15

Peter Steinbrueck legislative aide Stephanie Pure: $0

FYI - I hear that Pure has raised almost $10k. Won't be reported until next C-4 filing deadline of March 10.

Eli-

Where did you get your numbers? I just looked at the PDC website and I see very different numbers in some instances and closer in others.... But still in the interest of accuracy could you enlighten us with your sources.... campaigns, filings?

I'm holding my breath, waiting for the white smoke, and then for Josh to stand on the Papal balcony and dress one of these candidates with his favorite cliche: badass.

Josh, the suspense is killing us. Which one is the badass? Please include liberal quotations from your past columns and a discussion of the contradictions of others.

Discuss.

Dear Strange Numbers: I got my numbers from the current PDC filings, as of yesterday afternoon. Maybe my math was bad, or maybe the PDC updated the money information on its web site this morning and now the numbers are different.

Anyway, if you have different numbers than me, post them here in the comments, and I'll double-check my numbers where necessary.

If I'm wrong on any of the info I posted, I'll post an update.

Thanks.

Liberal progressives should get behind Stephanie Pure. Centrists, semi-Conservative Democrats should get behind Street and losers behind Lindie.
Así de sencillo.

Even the dogs on the street know Murray is running, I overheard him at Seattle U telling another politico he was mos def running. Good for him, and Pat just needs to retire, she had a good run.

ELI: not to keep bugging you about islamofascism but http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2006/02/how_muslim_blac.html

Check it out. Pure got some good press in this morning's PI. Second item in

this Jamieson column

Eli, you really do need to keep on top of the contributions in this race (and others as well) if you're going to start posting about it on the Slog. Rather than the simple "Search the Database" function from the PDC, you really need to go to "View the Reports" for a better picture.

For instance, your numbers for Dick Kelley are far lower than what he reported on his latest amended C4 submission. What you missed were the hard pledges ... Kelley's totalled some $16,250 in an amended C4 that was filed on February 13, a full four days prior to your Slog entry.

I'm sure there were some differences of the same sort in other campaign fund-raising reports. I cite these pledges to Dick Kelley of more than twice as much as you reported (in addition to the funds you did locate) as a prime example of the phenomenon.

Well, N, pledges aren't donations ... yet. Counting actual money received is the only way to make an apples-to-apples comparison, and on that standard, Richard Kelley's amended C4 you're excited about only lists $2800 in real live money. So actually crediting Kelley with over $6000 is quite generous of Eli.

Dollars in the door, not pledges are what count. This is looking like a great race. Bill Sherman is the sleeper: brilliant, tough lawyer who has been prosecuting DV cases, great on enviromental issues.

I have been thoroughly impressed by Sherman. He is a breath of fresh air. He has his priorities in the right place and the skills to be a leader in Olympia.

Try again. It is neither $6,000 nor $15, but somewhere in the middle. Check the PDC reports. You may get it right yet. But since you keep calling me a perrennial candidate, I'm not holding my breath!
Linde Knighton

PS: It's the Progressive Party, not the perrennial candidate party.

I think Pedersen would be a great additon to the legislature, and best positioned to fill Murray's shoes on leadership in the arena of LGBT equality. This could be particularly important following the announcement of the marriage decision from the state supreme court.
