What’s Wrong w/ This Picture?

Posted by on January 15 at 14:30 PM

Today’s David Horsey cartoon shows Seattle City Council Member Richard Conlin chairing last Thursday’s Position #9 vacancy hearing.

Horsey draws a line of crackpots queing up to the microphone (a guy in a clown suit, a naked guy, a prostitute, and a guy in a rain coat w/ a fish in his pocket and tennis racket in his hand) and Conlin is asking “So, what are your qualifications?”

The problem is… Conlin wasn’t even at Thursday’s hearing.

It was announced, vaguely, that Conlin had a prior commitment.

Just sayin’.

I get more useful political commentary from Garfield than I do David Horsey. Even conservative goon cartoonist Michael Ramirez is better than David Horsey, and that's saying a lot. And Horsey won a pullitzer?

I mean, I find the recent trend of conservative cartoonists' use of racial quotas in their strip characters to deliver their talking points really disturbing and disingenuous; but Horsey's extremely lazy, literal, tired and often inaccurate analogies make the former seem like a breath of fresh air.

Horsey is no more out of it than is your reviewer Bess Lovejoy who appreciates a book on the vicious murder of a young girl because it forces the reader to "identify with her killers" and "inspires compassion for everyone involved."

Now why is it a good thing to empathize with wicked behavior? (Or is that language too judgmental when it comes to mere murder as opposed to preventing gays from getting married?) Have you no sense of proportion? Is Ms. Lovejoy suggesting that anyone of us could have been the murderers? Rubbish.

Next you'll praise a sympathetic biography of Charles Manson.

Point noted. Apparently, Horsey himself was not at the council hearings and, knowing that most of us weren't either, figured he could get away with an inaccuracy.
It's too bad most of the daily papers didn't note that CM Conlin was too busy with "other business" to show up. And this is the guy who wants to head up the council?
I've gotten of the mind that all the members of the City Council should dress up like clowns. Everytime they come together, it is the biggest clown show in town - even without the (about) 100 extras.
Wait until Jean Godden takes it over.

Ummm...instead of focusing on Horsey's cartoon, why the heck aren't folks asking where Conlin was and demanding an answer?

Did you ever notice that when you elect a city council full of community activists who have never been particularly successful in any of their previous endeavors that they tend to get intoxicated with the power and prestige the position brings. They become arrogant, aloof, and lazy. We get the know nothing council we have because we refuse to hold them accountable, and we don't place any value on knowledge and experience. The Stranger and the rest of our media are part of the problem. Witness Judy Nicastro, who ran as champion of the renters, but once elected joined the Rainier Club and liked to hang out with the Paul Allen crowd. Replaced by Jean Godden who won election by just playing the kindly old lady, but never opened her mouth and told us where she stands on any issue. If we don't demand quality councilmembers we certainly won't get them.
