What’s real?

If it wasn't for James Frey taking a page from Dave Eggers, doctoring his memoirs and calling it an autobiography, this discussion and the offshoots thereof would have never happened.
Fate is a strange animal. Every event, no matter how strange, is a product of events and decisions that preceded it.
BTW, I'm not buying the hype. *I* didn't take Frey's work seriously for a moment. After Eggers' debut, I realized that memoirs can be as much as product of fiction as a product of reality. It's still fiction the second you start making shit up, no matter how much of it is steeped in truth.
And in reality, the vast majority of good fiction is a product of real life events the author has experienced.

With all due respect, the debate about authenticity in music has been raging full bore for centuries. It certainly didn't start with Lomax and Leadbelly. That's for sure
Cultural power is the ability to create a circle and place some things inside that circle and other things outside of it.
Claims of authenticity are one modality through which this sort of inside/outside power is exercised.
