What I’m For…

Posted by on January 9 at 11:51 AM

Legalization of all drugs and, ergo, ending the war on said drugs, which has been going worse than that in Iraq for decades. It is past time we ended this futile fiasco.

Going through life without a single tattoo or piercing. This is about the most non-conformist thing one can do at this late date.

Georges Bataille’s The Story of the Eye and Pauline Réage’s Story of O. These tomes are the twin towers of 20th-century erotic literature. Roll over, Anaïs Nin, and tell Henry Miller the news.

Segal,

You are FOR legalization of all drugs? Even tobacco? Are you ok with cannibs cafe's?

I'm okay with cannabis cafes.
If all drugs are going to be legal, then, yes, let tobacco be legal. If all mind-altering drugs are going to be illegal, then make tobacco illegal, too. Let's end the hypocrisy.

Story of the Eye is good and all, but I prefer Blue of Noon. Any book with a character named "Dirty" must be read by everyone.

Story of the Eye is marred by Bataille's excessive use of Freudian symbolism. More straightforward eroticism would be better than excessive focus on the deep meaning of eggs, for instance.

I read Story of the Eye when I was young and thought excessive use of Freudian symbolism was cool. Maybe it's one of those books best appreciated before you reach a certain level of enlightenment. Whatever the case, erotica, more than most literary forms, bypasses the usual "logical" aesthetic criteria. One person's huge turn-on is another's linguistic saltpeter.
