The Man Who Conned The Stranger

Posted by on January 13 at 17:25 PM

First, the Smoking Gun nails James Frey for fabricating chunks of his best-selling memoir, A Million Little Pieces. Yesterday a woman in Illinois filed a lawsuit charging Frey with fraud. And now a Stranger investigation reveals that a piece Frey wrote for us in 2004 was riddled with falsehoods. Christopher Frizzelle reports.

* Steinbrueck's Preliminary Choices for Appointment to the City Council*

Stranger friends: here is my preliminary "short" list of confirmed nominees to fill the city council position recently vacated by Jim Compton. I will forward this names to the full council on Tuesday morning. I am reviewing candidates' resumes all weekend, and will post more names as I make my decisions. I am also alerting my candidates as early as possible so they can hopefully benefit from my endorsement and get to work on obtaining support from other councilmembers over the weekend:

My choices are as follows:

# 2 Juan "hellraiser" Bocanegra
#16 Robert Zaponne
#18 Javier Valdez
#20 Gail Chiarello
#34 Stella Chao
#58 Roger Valdez
#59 Mark Henshaw
#79 Ross Baker
#87 Alice Woldt
#91 Denise "Cookie" Bouldin

Fortunately, we have some very good candidates to choose from. I am seeking the best and the brightest, who possess great personal interity, a proven record of commitment to community and the common good, and are willing to work hard and collegially (something lacking right now) on the council and run for election in the fall of '06. As I have eight additional choices to make between now and Tuesday, I welcome your comments and suggestions. Please email me at peter@petersteinbrueck.net.

cheers, peter

I read the entire smokinggun.com article and have followed the developing story in the media, and you know what? The stories all focus on the non-existent jail stint but don't mention how he also claimed a role in a train wreck tragedy that happened while he was in high school, but in reality he wasn't even friends with the victims. That's just fucking creepy.

James Frey should have each arm tied to a 800 pound bull, held in check. Then, once he is secured, the bulls should be let loose. The man is unworthy of any of what he has acquired. He is a complete and absolute fraud, as is his mentor, Oprah.
The only good thing to come of this, is that maybe people will take Oprah a bit less seriously; however, I doubt it.
The people who look to Oprah for their reading material likely read out loud.

Myers & Company, P.L.L.C., a Seattle law firm, has filed a class action law suit against James Frey and Doubleday alleging that Mr. Frey's book, A Million Little Pieces, misled consumers. The suit seeks the purchase price of the book and the value of the time consumers spent reading the book.
If you purchased the book from a Washington retailer and are interested in becoming a plaintiff in the class action, you should contact Myers & Company. The phone number is 206-398-1188 and the e-mail is mmyers@myers-company.com.
