So the Prophet Muhammad Walks Into a Bar…

Posted by on January 8 at 10:09 AM

A Danish newspaper is under fire—death threats, protests, international condemnation—for publishing a series of cartoons that mocked the Prophet Muhammad. The NYT reports

When the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published 12 cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, including one in which he is shown wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse, it expected a strong reaction in this country of 5.4 million people.

Muslims gathered at city hall in Copenhagen in October to protest cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published in a newspaper, Jyllands-Posten.

But the paper was unprepared for the global furor that ensued, including demonstrations in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, death threats against the artists, condemnation from 11 Muslim countries and a rebuke from the United Nations.

“The cartoons did nothing that transcends the cultural norms of secular Denmark, and this was not a provocation to insult Muslims,” said Flemming Rose, cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten, Denmark’s largest newspaper, which has declined to apologize for the drawings.

The piece goes on to talk about whether Denmark’s “famously liberal laws on free speech have gone too far.”

Yeah, that free speech stuff—how much of it can one country stand?

The xenophobe in me reacted harshly to that idiotic statement. Can we all agree to stick up for free speech? You would think that a newspaper that is currently under assault from the Feds for publishing stories that annoyed the president would fall squarely on the side of free speech. For Muslim immigrants to the liberal democracies, I would say this: if you can’t stand the free speech, stay the hell out of the West. (And, yes, I’m opposed to idiotic “speech codes” that seek to protect sensitive homos from hate speech.) Seriously—free speech, and the occasional offense it causes, is part of the price of admission. One Danish Muslim calls the cartoons “mental torture.” That’s bullshit. It’s a cartoon. Oh, you’ve got every right to be offended, of course, and to fight speech you regard as bigoted with more speech (even protests), but death threats and insisting that it shouldn’t be legal for a paper to mock your prophet because it hurts your feelings? Sorry, no.

And how can one possibly argue with this:

Soren Krarup, a retired priest and leading voice in the party, said the Muslim response to the cartoons showed that Islam was not compatible with Danish customs. He said Jesus had been satirized in Danish literature and popular culture for centuries - including a recent much-publicized Danish painting of Jesus with an erection - so why not Muhammad?

Damn straight: Why not Muhammad? Why not L. Ron Hubbard? Why not Jesus Christ? Why not Nazi Popes? Why not Joseph Smith? Freedom of thought, freedom of speech—it means, amongst other things, people have a right to think your religious beliefs are utterly ridiculous and the right to say so.

Unfortunately Krarup goes on to say this…

“Muslim immigration is a way for Muslims to conquer us, just as they have done for the past 1,400 years.”

That’s crap, of course. Xenophobic crap. Pointing out that immigrating to a country with liberal tradition of free speech means tolerating the occasional swipe at your sacred cows is not xenophobic, however. It’s necessary, it’s crucial. Liberal democracies won’t survive—to say nothing of liberal newspapers—if they shy away from making that point aggressively.

The real difference between a cartoon of Jesus and a cartoon of Muhammad, and the cause for all the (totally unsurprising) global uproar, is that the Koran specifically forbids any visual representation of Muhammad. This is one of the unbreakable rules of Islam - and is behind much of the creativity in the Muslim world's art and architecture.

So, from that standpoint, Muslims are absolutely right to be outraged. But as us First Amendment types and Danish cartoonists know, religious dogma isn't law, so we have the legal right to write or say just about any damn thing we please. If we lived in Kashmir, maybe not so much, but luckily we live in George Bush's Freedomland.

“Muslim immigration is a way for Muslims to conquer us, just as they have done for the past 1,400 years.”

That’s crap, of course. Xenophobic crap.

Sure is. But consider what you get if you take in militant immigrants who refuse to adopt the dominent culture. It might not be directed, there may not be a master plan ... the end result is quite similar to what you get with the phrase Karup used.

You can look to history for what happens. Young, active militant cultures tend to horn in and dominate more passive native cultures. This happens - has happened - throughout history. It's what people, lord love 'em, do.

Way ah heard it, Mohammid was a compulsive masterbator. Heh, heh, heh, just kidding ...

If you don't like it,DO NOT BUY the newspaper or magazine. DO NOT READ IT. If you don't like what is being stated, TURN THE TV or THE RADIO OFF. I use this lovely method every time I hear Bush destroy the english language, while making stupid dumb ass remarks.
That the beauty of freedom. You have choices.

Point of order - back where I come from - well, where I lived at any road, for a few years - that was just the way people talked. A regional accent kinda thang.

Variety is a good thing. Or thang.

compulsive masterbator

With 6 wives? I don't think so :)

I am for the fredom of speech. But I see a problem with a guy starting making Jew jokes, if he is german and has a funny mustache.

Same with implying that every muslim by nature is terrorist, when the owner of this speech is a white christian capitalist.

Jesu maria... Does anyone remember the Gary Larson "Farside" cartoon, with Mohmammad sitting in his house, reading a paper with a mountain pushed up against his doorbell? Does anyone remember if there was a worldwide Muslim freak-out about it?

I'm just so goddam happy the paper declined to apologize...

Attention Militant Muslims: Have any of you gotten the idea that you make yourselves really fucking unpopular every time you issue death threats to people who piss you off? That the response of the rest of the world is much more likely to be "Fuck off and die" than to have any sympathy for you and your touchy asses? You guys are worse than politically-correct assholes.

Western Civilization is on the decline and has been since 1914 when all the best and brightest were killed off. Now all we have are so many pussies who don't have the inner fortitude to stand up FOR anything. The optamists will learn Arabic; the pessamists will learn Chinese.

Sianara loosers!

Anyone know of a good website where I can get my latest Mohammid t-shirt, preferable one with the comment about he's running out of virgins for all the suicide bombers.

What happened to writing a letter to the editor?
The violent reaction to recent Muhammed cartoons simply validates the portrayal of Muhammed and the message of the cartoons.

Where can I see the Muhammad cartoons?

check out this site. Hopefully the picture is still there (it is as of 4/02/2006).

listen all u people who make wrong the teachings of the allah you day will be on the day of resserrection and watch the rath of allah.

that will be your fate

People from the other religion may say the same thing about islam. Bombing the innocent just does not click with Allah's character. Whoever kills the innocent will face the wrath of Allah on the resurrection day.

Allah, shmalla,
if u were raised in Israel you would most likely be a Jew, in USA a christian, in Tibet a Buddhist, it is all man-made crap and means nothing.
Living an honest life, harming no-one, that is what would make a peaceful world. May Allah punish all you believers for your violent and hateful ways.

Can't agree more Angie...

may we all live an honest live, harm no-one, and make the world a better place. May Allah bless you all.

I just don't understand! This world has gone crazy. It has always been crazy, but more so today than ever before. Why does a stupid cartoon stir up so much anger when poverty, murder, hate, war etc. seems to just get looked over. God Save Us All!

You know why a cartoon stirs up so much violence? That's because it is just another reason to kill and burn and commit violent crimes in the name of thier so called religion of peace. The way they are acting you would think that the cartoons were printed yesterday, not so! check out the dates that these cartoons were printed and circulated and then ask yourself, what took them so long to get pissed? It's just another excuse!

I'm Danish. I live in Copenhagen.

Here are some not well-known facts:

1. A couple of years ago the same paper refused to run cartoons poking fun of Jesus, because of fear of losing subscribers. Apparently, they are not so afraid of losing their Muslim readers.

2. The newspaper had consulted a professor at the South-Danish University, who strongly advised against publishing the drawings. They went ahead and published the pics anyway.

3. The muslim leaders who took the drawings around the world to show to different governments to provoke a reaction, also brought along derogative photos and drawings of Muhammed that had _not_ been published in the news paper. These pics have caused a lot of damage as they are a lot more insulting than the original drawings.

4. Denmark is one of the countries supporting the US in Iraq. Recently 7 Muslim youths were arrested and are being tried for planning a terrorist attack.

The problem with the argument of this being about freedom of speech is that the pictures are disrespectful. Not a good starting point for a debate. Denmark is right next to Germany. Remember those cartoons that the Nazi press did of minorities. Should we be getting Goebbels' old materials out today and publishing them in order to create debate? Don't think so.

The debate, if there is going to be one, should be about Democracy and women's liberation in Muslim countries. A great starting point for such a debate us the book: "I Accuse" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is a former-Muslim, who has quite a few things to say and says them respectfully and with excellent insight. That being said, she actually thinks that it was good that the pictures were published and also said that the fundamentalists should not be allowed to create such terror and stifle debate. She wants to see a "Life of Brian" version of the prophet's life. Her life is under threat by a bunch of Muslim extremists in Holland, the same group that succeeded in killing Vincent Van Gogh, whose movie she produced, "Submission, part one", about violence against Muslim women.

These is a lot to talk about, but a bunch of racist pics should not be the starting point of such an important debate.

Its an interesting time, I agree with alot of you who say our world seems to be going crazy, And sure there are alot of extremists out there just looking for any excuse to act violently towards others, they obviously have nothing better to do with their lives, they cant care to much about there own familys and children as i doubt they would run off to do battle for little or no cause if they did, Just look around yourself, there are sicko freaks everywhere, every week in the newspapers sick mother fuckers of all creeds are acking out fucked up fantasies on the innocent, these muslims who think they are off to the land of virgins after killing other ppl for there faith are freaks just like these sickos all around us raping and murdering our neibours. wheather you believe in an afterlife or not , these fuckers will all end up in same place , and it aint going to be heaven, judged they will be by themselves, and disgusted they will be in themselves, just as we are disgusted in them now. ive been looking into this Qur,an and thus far im not at all surprises that if this txt was rammed into young children from a small age we end up with todays result, i question if this book was not revealed to mo man by the devil himself.

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG....

Fuck Muhammed. Fuck Religion. And Fuck it all.

Stop using my name for an excuse to kill.

And FUCK you to for being so ignorant

Patrick you are not reading the Qur'an if you hold that opinion. Because the Qur'an is some what historical, but mostly focuses on developing ones belief in Allah. Any mention of fighting is about the fights that occurred during the beginning of the Islamic movement. If any Muslim says that the Qur'an grants them the right to fight is not telling you what he read, but what he wants to believe. You need to understand that these people who are violently protesting are illiterate and are lead by power hungry clerics looking to flex their power muscles. The cartoons were very insulting and disrespectful. And all people should respect the beliefs of others regardless if they agree or not.
You should pity the protestors for not being able to think beyond their local leaders.

Fuck Allah, fuck Islam, fuck all terrorist in the middle east, I can wait to join the Army and come fucking kill you stupid bastards.

I think the cartoons are funny! Who cares if the Muslims are offended! They are the most violent scum on the earth. The Prophet Mohammed? Never heard of him! As for the Koran, I bought two copies from the local bookstore, fiction section of course. I keep a copy of the Koran in my bathroom and use its pages as toilet paper.

JUST LET THE RAG HEADS HAVE THEIR WAY, THERE JUST A BUNCH OF SAND NIGGERS ANY HOW ....WHY NOT BLOW EM ALL AWAY
