Seeking Perfect Produce

Posted by on January 17 at 16:25 PM

There is still a HomeGrocer.com-shaped hole in my life. And today the promise-filled kiwis I carefully selected at QFC were mashed by the time I got home thanks to an inept bagger.
I see Safeway has started bringing groceries to somebody in my building, and the Pioneer Organics insert in this week’s paper is enticing. Anybody have a good experience with a local grocery or produce delivery service?

i want to do the pioneer organics thing, but i don't want them to leave the stuff outside my building where someone could just take it. . .

they must have a solution for that (a scheduled deliver time maybe?)

Pioneer Organics has always worked well with me, but I have a front porch. I'm not sure I'd be so keen on it if I still lived in an apartment. They will give you a delivery window if you happen to be home on their delivery day but then if you didn't have to have a day job you could just grow your own kiwis or something.

If you drive, you could have it delivered to work.

I had Pioneer Organics for a while and found it very good. They did deliveries in the evening, 6 or so. The selection was good and the quality was maybe a hair better than what I get in a good supermarket. I only quit because I'd gone into it hoping for local produce, and much of their produce isn't local (though they do try). If you're just looking for a grocery delivery service and you're into organics, I'd recommend it highly. There's a distinct hippie vibe, but no worse than the PCC.

If you want serious eco-groceries, there are many CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) organizations in the area. Google "CSA Seattle" and see what comes up. I had an excellent experience with Full Circle Farms, but I don't know if they're still around. The disadvantage of a CSA is that there's a minimum amount they're willing to put in their boxes--if you're cooking for one (as I was) you can end up with a fridge full of kale after a while.

I believe the service provided by Pike Place Market farmers is set up to deliver organic foods to several "drop-off" locations in Seattle...I'd check it out...they might have a drop off area very close to your home (but maybe that defeats the purpose of "delivery to your home" for you).

I'm biased (my girl worked for Pioneer for five or so years, and I've got friends there), but I think you should give them a try. They can usually work out a way to get your produce into a safe place. Call 'em up and see what they can do for you...

I love getting Pioneer Organics home delivery! It is top-shelf. You can switch it up every time. It is cost effective and just dipped in dopeness. I LOVE yams and didn't now it for 25 years! P.O. saved me the pain of skipping yam eats for a lifetime. They'll be able to stash your food somewhere creative like they do for us! Do it!

I received a card in the mail recently for an outfit called Small Potatoes Urban Delivery (SPUD) that delivers organic produce and groceries--I think they're a Canadian company, that just recently expanded to Seattle. Anyone tried them?

I'm a SPUD customer, and they've been great. I prefer them to Pioneer Organics, with whom I had a bad experience.

SPUD's service has been a step up. A couple of weeks ago, SPUD packers forgot the cereal I'd ordered. (It happens.) When I complained, they responded immediately and graciously; I got a refund and a free box of cereal. So, yay SPUD.

Being kind of a hippie type myself and all, I like that SPUD highlights local produce and displays the miles that food travels from the farm (or factory) to SPUD headquarters. People who are interested in eating more locally-produced food will find that very convenient.

I live in an apartment building, so I have P.O. deliver to my work. At my last place, the landlord was kind enough to accept deliveries when I wasn't there. Pioneer comes highly reccommended from me. If you get picky or have a problem with any of their produce, they won't bat an eye on fixing it for you. They'll either replace it for free next week or give you something else witout a hassle.

I also live in an apartment and had Pioneer Organics. Set it up in advance, and they can leave your box right inside your door. Just beware of the size box you get. I ordered the small, but I still ended up chucking a lot because I didn't have time to learn how to cook the exotic ingredients that arrived every week (strange kale! bitter greens! things you can't just saute with garlic!). It is fun to have a boxfull of lovely fresh veggies waiting when you get home though.

If your interest is in general groceries and not specifically high-end produce I suggest delivery from Albertsons.com. My wife and have tried web based delivery through both Safeway and Albertsons and have found that Albertsons has more of their products listed on the web site; has a better product search feature; and provides more complete product descriptions than the Safeway web site. Also, the people at Albertsons who fill your order seem to do a better job substituting items from your list that are out of stock.

I still miss HomeGrocer.com too.

Pioneer Organics is good, though I have stopped using them since I've lived at my current apartment building, where my manager is a flake and I've had packages stolen. I, too, had a little trouble using some of the unusual ingredients, but part of the benefit is that it encourages some variety in your diet.

Safeway sucks. Their web ads are misleading, they don't give enough info about their products on the pain-in-the-ass website, they spam you. . . bleh. Sorry substitute for Home Grocer.

$30 for a two person box with enough food for two people and enough variety from week to week that it doesn't get boring. And, the food (expect for exotics like Kiwis) is grown locally and is organic. Plus, no more trips to farmers markets.

the word-of-mouth is, check this out (now if only I could get my meat straight-from-the-farm and my beer straight-from-the-brewer)

I have been getting Pioneer Organics deliveries for almost 3 years. They are fantastic! I just moved to an apartment building. I got an extra front-door key from the manager and sent it to PO. They leave my box right outside the door to my unit! The variety of produce has tremendously expanded my diet, and they include recipes for the unusual ones right in the box. Recently, they began adding dairy, meats, bread, frozen dinners, coffee and dry goods (all organic) available for delivery. AND, they are now committed to biodiesel and running their delivery trucks with it! Later this month they're offering free cooking classes! Blah blah blah Pioneer Organics are the best!
