It’ll be a rainy day in hell…

Posted by on January 17 at 14:08 PM

This is my first winter in Seattle, and I was nearly driven mad by this past month’s nearly 14 inches of rain. It led me to check the world record for a month, and appears we just missed it — by 352 inches.

Hell is wet, and it’s called Cherrapunji.

Tom, Seattle sees less rain annually than Houston, New York City, Atlanta, Memphis, St. Louis, and most places in Hawaii. It's the constant gray/threat of rain/drizzle that's made the weather here infamous.

I know -- I did the research before I came. I think it rains less (in terms of inches) in Chicago and Cleveland, which were my two most recent ports of call. But 14" in a single one-month period is psychologically grueling.

But as far as I'm concerned, it's still lots better than waking up to 14" of snow and trudging out to a car covered in snow up to its antennae. As weather goes, Chicago's a shade more pleasant than Cherrapunji.
