Lately I’ve been using the word “funnily.” It’s a good word, I like the way it sounds. But the other day, Dan Savage caught me and told me it wasn’t a real word at all. So, being the highly respected professional that I am (ahem), I had to cut back on using my favorite fictional word. It was really quite devastating. But today my friend Bryan informed me that according to www.dictionary.com, funnily is an acceptable word! It says so right here! I couldn’t be happier.
Come now, Dan. Take an adjective, add "-ly" to end, get a valid adverb. One of the best things about English is how readily it supports converting words to new parts of speech, and coining part-of-speech conversions (especially verbs from nouns!) is a big part of what helps give papers like The Stranger their hipster intellectual edge (and makes stick-in-the-mud prescriptive grammarians crazy).
At the very least, it appeals to the same descriptive-linguist types who support your campaign to see "fuck" in a Washington Post headline.
Funnily is totes a word.
"Not a real word" is one of my least favorite phrases, right up there with "intelligent design" and "free gift."
