Equal Opportunity Offender

Posted by on January 25 at 14:04 PM

Yesterday, I sternly held Weyerhaeuser accountable for donations it made to The Speakers Roundtable, the GOP PAC that financed the recent sleazy and misleading sex offender attack ads on Democrats. (Weyerhaeuser gave $5,000 to the Republican committee back in June 2005.)

In going over the finance reports, however, I also found this donation to the GOP group: $2,500 in December ‘05 from SEIU, the super progressive labor union.

I called SEIU to ask what gives.
SEIU 775 spokesman Adam Glickman said his union works with both sides of the aisle. He also put the donation to the GOP PAC in perspective, noting that in the big 2004 election cycle, SEIU gave $92,000 to the Democratic Party and just $22,500 to the Republicans. Additionally, SEIU spent $800K on Gregoire TV ads in the 2004 campaign and another $450K for her recount effort.

Glickman wouldn’t comment, however, on the Speakers Roundtable sex offender ads, which SEIU money helped pay for.

You think the SEIU is "super progressive"?

Check out the weak, reformist, regressive ideas they picked in their http://www.sinceslicedbread.com/ contest.

Universal health care paid by a regressive sales tax - that's a cutting edge idea?

And that one came from a Seattleite.

the Since Sliced Bread contest may seem to us to be kind of obvious, but to much of the country they are kind of radical. Keep in mind the wonderful bubble we live in, and also keep in mind how these ideas would affect the less progressive states.

I think the point wasn't the adjective used but that a labor union - that bastion of left-side of the aisle-ism - is handing out money to a GOP group. You know - the party of The Man and management. The Enemy.

What I also meant to say is that I am disappointed the SEIU would give any money to a conservative PAC. And they didn't give any reasoning better than that? What a bummer. Did they say anything else, Josh?

Nope.
Glickman made it clear from the #s that SEIU prioritizes the Democrats, but he also made it clear that Republicans have been supportive of some SEIU issues, and so, they give to Republicans as well. He didn't have anything to say about the attack ad.

SEIU seems to have forgotten something very important: even if some in the GOP support their agenda, electing more Republicans to the legislature will ultimately hurt the SEIU. The stupid-as-fuck enviros make the same mistake when they throw parties for Rep. Dave Reichert's "opposition" to ANWR drilling. Stupid, stupid liberals.

Also, universal health care as paid for by a sales tax is almost the same as what every progressive European country has. The VAT ensures that regular, middle class folks have "skin in the game" as far as paying for their benefits.

As a former member of SEIU local 6, I have to say, this is a fucking disgrace.

To think that this country and this state which has such a rich Labor History, would allow their activist union (SEIU) to give money to right wingers is a fucking disgrace.

The 8 hour day, days off, May Day, health and safety, collective bargaining, Union Solidarity, the right to strike, worker power this didnt come from Eastern Europe, it came from Labor. The North American Labor movement, a fucking bastion of the left, that has now become a fucking joke.

SEIU giving money to fucking right wingers is a slap in the face to the history of Labor.

Unions have gone to hell.

As the great Joe Pesci once said:

FUCK YOU U FUCKING FUCKS!!

Hey Belltowner:
Do they really use a sales tax in Europe to pay for health care. A tax on income would be less regressive.

Europeans have taxes on everything: income, sales, gas, cigarettes, liquor. They have a combination of extremely regressives taxes and extremely progressive taxes. I don't know if the VAT is specifically earmarked for health care, but their overall tax system is progressive. That might explain why my truck driver third cousin in Denmark lives in a five-bedroom house in the suburbs while my advertising exec second cousin lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Copenhagen.
