Slog in the News

Posted by on December 8 at 13:59 PM

Our trusty Stranger blog—the SLOG!— keeps showing up in the news.
Today’s Seattle Times credits us for being the first on the Paul Berendt story & yesterday’s PI fashioned a whole story out of Eli’s Tom Carr bust.

The mainstream dailies used to be reluctant to cite the Stranger’s reporting, but they’ve been on it lately.

Glad to be of service, guys. Although, note to David Postman at the Seattle Times: We wrote about Berendt’s pending resignation on the Friday before the X-mas party, which may explain why it was “a topic of gossip” there.

Josh,

Someone just pointed this out to me. You wrote, "...yesterday's PI
fashioned a whole story out of Eli's Tom Carr bust. "

Actually, that PI story, while using information from that post and email amongst Mike Lewis, Carr and Eli, was one that I had discussed two weeks ago with PI editor, Mark Matassa, to make up for their inaccurate article that could not be rectified with a simple correction. You are correct, however, in that the PI piece was fortified by The Stranger's superb investigative work. Good going, Eli.

But Dom...

Did the PI even move on the story until Eli started making calls? It doesn't seem as if the PI was going to do a follow-up until Eli let them know that Carr was blaming their reporter for the inaccurate numbers. So I think Josh's post gets it right. You told 'em, they ignored you.

Actually, Dan, the PI did listen to me.

Their story was written because I made the numbers an issue. After I raised doubt about his figures, the PI began investigating. After returning from a Thanksgiving vacation, Mike Lewis questioned Carr - a full week before The Stranger Slog item was posted.

Eli continued to press Carr, which furthered the process. However, even without Eli’s efforts, other members of the Marijuana Policy Review Panel and I would have gotten the facts to the PI. So, don’t think for a minute that I would let Carr’s error go without a follow-up piece setting the record straight. That just wouldn’t be like me, would it?

Please note, I didn’t post the comment to which you responded. Josh did. I simply wrote him a private note. I would have made this a casual email to you as well, but now I have to reply publicly in this nifty new comments section.

Dominic,
As Jennie Schaeffer, who sat in front of me in Ms. Gabig's 8th Grade Geography class, told me: "If you don't want anyone to know, don't write it down."

Omigod - I'm a huge fan of Ms. Schaeffer. Not that huge, really, I'm only 5'8".

It's fine that you posted it, don't you worry.

Dominic
