Sims Snubs Urban League Award Ceremony

Posted by on December 10 at 14:13 PM

Over at horsesass.org, David Goldstein reports that his rival blogger, conservative Stefan Sharkansky (a former Stranger columnist, btw), got an award from the Urban League yesterday morning for being a tutor in the Urban League’s After School program.

Goldstein’s pissed. He writes:

I’m having a little cognitive dissonance problem here. I don’t mean to diminish Stefan’s admirable volunteer work, but surely an organization like the Urban League — dedicated to empowering African Americans — could have found some equally admirable volunteer to honor… who has not repeatedly gone on the record making racist comments about King County Executive Ron Sims, our state’s most prominent African American elected official.

Goldstein is referring to the fact that Sharkansky has likened Sims to African dictator Robert Mugabe.

While Goldy reports that Sims has gone on record denouncing Sharkansky’s comments, he left out the sexiest tid bit of the story. Sims was at the Urban League breakfast where Sharkansky got the award, and made a point of walking out on the breakfast early before the League paid its tribute to Stefan.

Josh, did Sims really snub the Urban League? Or did he snub Sharkansky? If an organization who is usually reputable decides to honer someone who compares me to a murderous African dictator, and I happen to be the most prominent black politician in the state, I would walk out too. Or not show up.

I think it's totally cool that Sims walked out too, and I think he was snubbing both Sharkansky and the Urban League.

I don't think Sims knew about the award until he was already at the breakfast. If he had known in advance, I imagine he might have skipped the event altogether.

I think the Urban League has the rap of being the more "accessible" black organization when compared to the NAACP, which is why Bush spoke at the Urban League and not the NAACP, and why Sharkansky feels ok getting involved.
