KEXP needs metal

Posted by on December 9 at 9:29 AM

I was talking with a music fanatic the other night about KEXP, and how, despite all the good they go for underground/alternative/indie music (and they do a lot of good), they pretty much ignore the metal community completely. Sure, there’s Sonic Reducer, the 9pm-midnight punk show that squeezes metal into all the other loud, fast rules style music that deservedly makes it onto the radio dial, but how about a metal show? I’ve heard rumors that such a show was being considered, but then nothing. Think about it….metal is what gave way to the “grunge” sound here in Seattle, for better or for worse. Metal shows pack various venues in town. Metal bands come to Seattle to work with our esteemed producers, and yet metal is 90% absent from our community radio station, the station that in many other ways supports a myriad of music styles. I pledged money to KEXP this past pledge drive and was going to write a letter with it asking for the station to bring in the all important metal community, but then I got worried that the note would get lost in the mix. So I’m asking now, who here thinks KEXP needs to get a metal show going to show support for this often ignored, undoubtedly important genre?

It's not a bad idea (although I wouldn't listen . . .), and you make a good argument. You should write to Kevin Cole and Don Yates and tell them how you feel. I know Lisa Wood would back you up.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of knee-jerk reactions about how lame local metal bands are, but the problem is there's tons of lame emo/indie rock bands in this city that get plenty of play too. Why not throw some variety in and play some metal as well? It can't hurt. God knows I'd rather hear some fourth-rate faux grunge wannabe than another sad-sappy fuckhead with four track and a broken heart.

Nope. No metal show. KEXP should stick to only playing good music.

Good music? As defined by?

defined by it not being metal.

Personally, I love metal. I own a lot of metal cds and albums. I put these things on my ipod and on my home stereo and I listen to them. I mean sure, it would be more exciting to tune into Reign In Blood or Slaughter of the Soul on KEXP, but until Seattle becomes overrun with Dave Lombardo look-alikes, I'll be content without metal on the radio.

Want to hear metal on a local station? Check out Rainydawg Radio (www.rainydawg.org) at the UW 9pm-11pm every weekday. Okay, so it's internet radio only, but increased local support can help to get a real frequency (hopefully someday soon).

Great, an indie music snob. Just what this town needs more of. Most of the people I know who love music, go to shows and are supportive of thriving music scene here in Seattle don't listen to only one kind of music. We leave that for the dorks who spend their days downloading Phish bootlegs and arguing over the best Dead live show.

metal? shouldn't that be kisw's job?

Only if "metal" includes stuff like Wormwood, Book of Black Earth, Splatterhouse, Skarp, Fall of the Bastards, Wolves in the Throneroom, Lesbian, etc. etc.

You should have come to the meeting where KEXP asked for input. I know you were invited :-D. They specifically talked about why they don't play metal- because everyone writes them and complains. If you want them to play it, you definately have to make that known.

Hey Ari, I wanted to come to that meeting but I came back from vacation *that day* and I was slammed. I'm planning on emailing over whatever comments I get here to the station, and I asked the DJs who invited me if I could email in comments. There are some shows on the station I can't stand, but I don't call in complaints...I wonder if that would change things if people who didn't like other kinds of music starting complaining...not saying this in a snarky way, just curious.

Yes! Yes!

Let's slit cheryl waters "mike chord" and throw some metal on the station. it doesn't have to be the middle of the damn day, but it would be such a relief to even hear 2 hours a week!

they should, however, mix the old with the new.

sure. why not? why so much indie hoo hoo? oh so tired of it. never liked it. great if you do but yeah, if i could change kexp there would be less indie and more hank williams III, robert johnson, saul williams, skip james, isis, steve reich, old crow medicine show, themselves, etc. etc.

i'm sure it's because i don't listen to kexp enough (which is an effect of them having indie rock on everytime i tune in) but hey... there's not enough variety.

I would like to see a phat 2-hour afternoon show on KEXP featuring composers like Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Ramon Sender, Iannis Xenakis, Henry Flynt, Tony Conrad, Luc Ferrari, Morton Subotnick, etc. You know what I'm sayin'? That's it: a mere 2 hours/week, but in prime fuggin' time, none of this Sunday at 1AM jive. Have Chris DeLaurenti host it. Kids need to learn about the majesty of drone and repetition. Word.
