Idiotic Immersion Journalism

Posted by on December 30 at 12:32 PM

I’ve enjoyed a few goofy plunges into “immersion journalism,” but never have I come close to doing anything as brazenly stupid as the 16-year-old Florida boy who spent his Christmas vacation traipsing around war-torn Iraq to “experience during my Christmas the same hardships ordinary Iraqis experience everyday, so that I may better empathize with their distress.”

Wow, I can't decide if that kid is awesome or if he should be sued for the time and money spent extracting him from his school project.

A bunch of young journalists such as myself can only be jealous of what this guy did. I could only wish that I could pack up and move out and report on some crazy stuff...

Undoubtedly what the kid did is admirable in the abstract--but who would do such a mind-fucky thing to his dear mother on Christmas? An embarrassingly idealistic dreamer who's lucky to be alive and deserves a spanking, that's who.

Still, there's no denying the inherent bad-assery of his actions...
