Driven to Hate: Let Ford Know You Think They’re Pussies for Caving to the American Taliban

Posted by on December 7 at 13:06 PM

So yesterday Ford denied caving in to threats from the American Family Association. Today they’re admitting it —after the AFA threatened Ford with a boycott, Ford agreed to pull its advertising from gay publications and cease sponsoring gay events. Americablog is all over it.

So what can you do? Gay or straight, you should at least pick up the phone and let local Ford dealers know that you won’t even consider buying a Ford after this. Why should straight people care? Because the same AFA fucks that have successfully intimidated Ford on the gay issue are also attacking straight rights—they’re the same assholes who have successfully intimidated retailers like Target into denying women access to morning-after pills. They’re the same assholes trying to convince the Feds not to release a vaccine for two strains of HPV , the virus that can cause cervical cancer in women. The HPV vaccine—already tested and 100% effective!—could save thousands of women’s lives every year. The AFA is fighting it.

Here’s a list of Ford dealers in King County . Call them, tell them you’re pissed —and remind them that the AFA’s boycott of Disney didn’t go anywhere. Tell them that when the AFA threatened Kraft, Kraft told the AFA to go fuck themselves. But Ford? The “Built Ford Tough” boys collapsed into a puddle when the AFA assholes threatened them with a boycott. So let Ford know what you don’t buy cars from companies that caves to right-wing hate mongers. And when the local dealers tell you that they didn’t make this decision, tell them that’s too bad. Tell them to scream and yell to Ford HQ and get this decision reversed, or you will never, ever consider buying a Ford.

And corporations can reverse themselves. Microsoft caved to right-wing Christian bullies, and then reversed itself. Tell `em Ford can too. Tell `em Ford better.

Since some of the ads were related to Jaguars in particular, here is the link to local Jag dealers as well.
"Jag-off" or "Jagov", by the way, is a regionalism from Pittsburgh, my hometown. It's the locals pronounciation of either Jerk-off or Jack-off. Example: "Those guys at Ford are a bunch of Jag-offs."

I was set to sign on the dotted line today for my truck that I have been wanting forever despite being gas hogs and getting a second job to make this purchase. But I told the dealer (Jim) I could not complete the purchase, because I did not want to do businses with a bunch of weak assholes who are homoboic. Jim, who appeared very annoyed by my decision, advised me that they had "nothing to do with Fords decision, and truly what was the big deal when all fuss would blow over in a few weeks or so and I would have the truck of my dreams." I questioned him why would I want to spend my money on a company that lies, and condones homoboic views. For all he knew he could have been selling the truck to a lipstick wearing dyke. I must say it felt very nice to tell him to go blow himself for making this type of statement and to fuck off. I am now in search of another truck not made Ford or tough. Anyone have suggestions? It would be appreciated as I am need of a truck that handles well in snow covered Minnesota.

Thank you, Claudia - I know that was a difficult sacrifice for you, especially when you've been waiting and saving for so long. And that dealer sounded like a jerk, so maybe you will be better off in the end.

I'm not much of an expert on trucks - but maybe we can find someone around here who can give you some great advice to find something else that will fit your dreams..

Any help would be appreciated.

I sent this letter to the AmericaBlog list of Ford pigs, and cc'd every single human in my address book.

er... um - this letter - (see above) http://www.bandelier.net/blog.asp#12950

Hello North Dallas Thirty, you are right, I should buy the Ford because it does fit my needs. But I won't. My thouhts are such, that if you start supporting organizations with this mentality and prejudices, what is to prevent them from going after other groups of individuals such as Latino's (which I am), African Americans or any one else they feel threatened by or do not think the way they do. As for working two jobs, I was brought up to never purchase anything that you can not afford, as a result of this I will work as many jobs as necessary and appreciate what I am able to buy with the money saved.
Again, even though I would love to get the truck I have worked hard for, I feel it is important to have some ethics and stand by what I feel is right.

NorthDallas--I'm sorry, I missed the part where protesting Ford's kowtowing to the American Family Association encourages young black females to have unprotected sex.

Claudia: Give Toyota a look--they're put together in the US, if the foreign angle's troubling you; they last forever; they have a fine powertrain and can climb anything/handle great in the snow.

Ford is giving the AFA the first inch—the fucks will be back for the mile, have no doubt. They're demanding that companies like Ford not only cease advertising to gays and lesbians, but drop domestic partner benefits, fairness in hiring policies, etc. Go to Americablog and read all about it.

You gotta resist 'em. This is serious business and anyone who thinks the AFA is going to stop with advertising, or with Ford, is being willfully naive.

Claudia, what exactly do you mean by "mentality and prejudices"?

I promise you, if advertising Jaguars and Land Rovers in gay publications was a business-intelligent decision, Ford would still be doing it, just as they still ARE advertising Volvos. If they were truly driven by antigay "mentality and prejudices", why wouldn't they withdraw ALL advertising, including Volvo? Why wouldn't they remove DP benefits immediately, as AFA demanded? Because it would cost them money.

The key to corporate acceptance of gay rights is both making realistic demands and rewarding the ones who comply. The AFA boycott of Ford was first announced in May and Ford stood fast; where were the campaigns on our side encouraging people to buy Fords in response, especially since Ford was scoring a 100 in HRC's rankings of corporations?

You may read this as you wish, Claudia; however, what I read it as is Ford making a decision that trying to appeal to a niche market with tepid response is not worth either the money spent or the negative publicity from different directions.

And to Boltgirl, the connection was made in Mr. Savage's original post between the AFA and the morning-after pill; I simply pointed out the fact that encouraging unprotected sex led to higher STD rates and deaths, as shown in black females.

Ford is giving the AFA the first inch—the fucks will be back for the mile, have no doubt. They're demanding that companies like Ford not only cease advertising to gays and lesbians, but drop domestic partner benefits, fairness in hiring policies, etc. Go to Americablog and read all about it.

Let me give you a short course in business, Mr. Savage.

-- The number-one expense in virtually all businesses is employee costs, primarily employee compensation and benefits. In the automotive industry, this is particularly high.

-- When people don't buy a company's products, there is no money coming in to pay these costs. In the auto industry, reduced demand results in shifts being taken offline and plants being idled or shut down.

-- When plants lose shifts or are idled, people who work in them lose their jobs, which also means they lose their pay and benefits.

-- Remaining plants or shifts, in order to stay competitive, must often ask for concessions from their workers in the form of reduced pay and benefits (e.g., GM).

-- When companies go into bankruptcy, employee benefit plans, especially retirement plans, are usually the first to be offloaded or severely slashed. The most common method is to revert benefit plans to "employee-only" -- which means families and partners/spouses lose coverage.

In short, while you, Aravosis, and HRC may love launching your hate-filled tirades, any financial pain you cause Ford is going to ultimately end up hurting Ford's workers, glbt AND straight. The AFA is smarter than they look; they know full well that the "gay community" quite often reacts without thinking, and they use it. All they had to do was to get one minor concession out of Ford, and the spew reaction from the Aravosises and HRCs of the world would put Ford into enough financial difficulty to ensure that the AFA got the rest of what they wanted, which was glbts losing benefits and jobs.

I wonder how those glbt workers will react when you tell them their jobs and their benefits were worth less than getting the "right" advertisements in gay magazines?

Wow. North Dallas Guy seems to spew off a lot of facts. I didn't need to read all of them though to see he's missing the point. Yes, Ford workers (including GLBTLMNOPQ, whatever ones) will ultimately suffer if no one is buying these cars. This should give them more motivation then, to take a stand in condemning the poor business decisions made by their company. I doubt they're all a bunch of deaf mutes.
As for the rest of us, why would anybody continue to buy from a company that agrees and kow-tows to an completely unrelated group that hates them? Maybe cause they hate themselves? Seems like you've got a lot of issues dude and a bit of a chip on your shoulder. Ford workers should realize pretty quickly how this affects them and do something about it themselves. When I left my message with the local Jag dealer I told them to report back up the chain and let the company know how this affects them. It's their decision. If Ford decides they want to go back to practices of non-discrimination and inclusion, the difference between us and the AFA is that we're much more willing to forgive and forget. I doubt they'd do the same.

Ah, but you see, you don't want them to make the right business decision; you want them to make the decision that panders to you.

If Ford were actually selling Jaguars and Land Rovers to gay people at a rate that justified advertising them to such a market, you'd have a point. But what Ford is telling glbts is that we don't spend enough money with them to justify the expense of a marketing campaign keyed to us for these brands, so doing so is losing money. Furthermore, doing so is costing them sales from another direction, which means they're losing even more money than that.

If Ford decides they want to go back to practices of non-discrimination and inclusion, the difference between us and the AFA is that we're much more willing to forgive and forget.

Ford hasn't left the practices of nondiscrimination and inclusion, unless these both suddenly require specific advertising campaigns in specific magazines.

And as for the "chip on my shoulder", perhaps I do; you see, I find it interesting that gay liberals like John Aravosis, Dan Savage, and HRC demanded swift and violent reprisals against companies like Ford for pulling advertising, but promoted politicians like John Kerry who pushed stripping gays of rights legally and gave them millions of dollars.

OK, last post. NDT, Dude, you're so off base here and still not getting it. Check this out: http://wardsauto.com/ar/auto_details_fords_deal/index.htm
It IS more than halting adverts in gay rags. Which by the way, probably do sell more Jags than if they advertised in say, Christianity Today. They HAVE left the practices of nondiscrimination and inclusion by letting a hate fueled organization convince them to actively discriminate against a specific minority by pulling their support from any gay-related event, cause, or what have you. That's why we're all demanding answers and being vocal about our disappointment.
I honestly don't care if they "pander" to me or not. It's why they're not that I have a problem with and I'm going to let them know it.
