Last Days: The Remainder

Posted by on August 10 at 8:00 AM

Here again is the weekly round-up of those items disqualified from the print version of Last Days due to space restrictions, time limits, or thematic concerns.

First nearly all news outlets made big stinks about Korea producing the world’s first cloned dog. It’s an Afghan pup named Snuppy, who was made from a cell taken from the ear of a male Afghan hound, transferred to a yellow Labrador, then delivered by caesarean section after 60 days of pregnancy. All of which is fascinating. But did you know a regular old dog could be killed by raisins? It’s true: As King 5 reports, raisins are poison for dogs, just like their juicy originator the grape, with 50 raisins or 30 grapes enough to kill a 25-lb pooch. (“Veterinarians still don’t know why dogs can’t stomach raisins and grapes,” said Dr. Mike Van Horn to K5’s Eric Wilkinson.)

There's nothing funny about Thursday's Associated Press story about the renewed threats made by Ayman al-Zawahri, key underling of Osama Bin Laden, who this week issued a tape promising vast new casualties for Britain and the U.S. at home and in Iraq. But there's no denying the kindergarten-level hilarity of the AP headline:

Al-Qaida's No. 2 threatens London, U.S.

Finally, there was this Saturday sighting from Hot Tipper Matt:

"My friends and I just got back from Wild Waves and I HAD to tell you about the most amazing sight there: A dozen Bears (you know, large, usually hairy, older gay men) having the time of their lives. They were dunking each other in the wave pool and going down water slides. The place was packed, and most of the people around probably had no idea. It was beautiful. Just so's ya know."
